At a time when the people were starving and the country was heading towards destruction, he had a large palace built for himself and this brought the end of the emperor. With a decision taken by the Senate, a coup was made to stop the bad course. As a result of the coup, Nero was tried to be executed, but he committed suicide. After Nero’s death, civil wars took place and his depictions were destroyed.

After Nero’s death, the Roman Senate supported Vespasian, making him emperor. It was decided to build an Arena in order to eliminate the internal turmoil in the country and to bring joy to the people. The place to be should be a place where the Roman people rushed for entertainment, to watch fights. The Arena, which has a capacity of 80,000 spectators and is called the Colosseum, was built on top of it. The bloodiest sports competitions in history were held in the arena and entertainment was held at an unprecedented level.

Emperor Vespasian’s life was not long enough to see the end of the Colosseum, but his son Titus had a giant opening that lasted 100 days. This is the greatest entertainment in Roman history. Gladiators were fought to death in the Colosseum, and criminals were fed to wild animals brought from Africa. Even naval wars were fought by filling it with water. The waters brought to the city from far distances by aqueducts were first collected in a certain area, and then filled into the Arena through the channels under the Colosseum with tunnels and a pump system. The engineers of the ancient period had installed a system capable of preventing water seepage. After the end of the naval battles in the arena, the discharge was completed within a few hours, again through the channels.

The naval battles that were waged were often fought to resurrect the ancient victories of Rome. The more blood shed in the arena, the more the audience enjoyed it. For this reason, in order to increase the excitement, the gladiators that fell from the ships struggled with the hungry crocodiles that were left in the water.

Structural and Architectural Features of the Colosseum

The Colosseum, which had 55 thousand seats at the time it was built, has turned into a structure where 80 thousand people can gather over time. Belt systems are used to carry the weight of people. There are 240 arches in total on the structure. In addition, seating areas are divided into sections according to classes and price difference. Those in the upper class and those who bought tickets at higher prices were seated in the front sections, and the seat of each person was determined according to their ticket number. There are various gates and tunnels in the Colosseum. In this way, citizens from different classes were able to enter without seeing each other. There are also places, brothels and souvenir shops in the corridors that appeal to all tastes of the Roman people. Apart from being a scene where gladiators or wild animals were fought, the arena was also the place where criminals were executed. The prisoners, who were given the death penalty, were brought here and left in cages. They were executed by making them fight with each other, with gladiators or with animals such as lions and tigers.

Arenas, such as the Colosseum, have a different significance for early Christians. Because the administration, which did not want the spread of Christianity in Rome, fed many Christians to animals in the Arena and punished some by burning them. Due to the blood spilled as a result of the death of many people in the arena, the ground was covered with a soil called rena in order to prevent the spread of the disease. The arena got its name from this soil that sucks the blood of the dead. In addition, the deceased were thrown into the well and sprinkled with salt.

the bottom of the Colosseum; It consists of the prisons of the prisoners, the rooms where the theater players prepare and the sections where the gladiator groups take place. This system at the bottom is so complex and cleverly designed that the groups in turn were able to enter the Arena without seeing each other. If there weren’t enough criminals to throw at the wild beasts, someone could be chosen at random from the audience, or the emperor himself could fight to the death. Since the gladiators who fought in the arena were chosen from the lowest strata of the society, they surrendered no matter what an emperor came across and the emperor was always winning. Gladiators were the most popular stage stars of the Roman people. So much so that their little toys were sold, people lined up to meet them, and the women admired them.

Prohibition of Gladiator Fights in the Colosseum

In the 5th century AD, Christianity began to spread in Rome and a priest entered the Arena to separate the fighting gladiators. The priest who entered the arena was stoned to death by the people, and gladiator fights in the Colosseum were forbidden. With the prohibition of fighting, the importance of the Colosseum gradually began to decline.

Marbles, sculptures and countless works of art covering the Colosseum, which was abandoned for many years, were used in the construction of structures such as churches. Today, most of it is in ruins. This building, which was registered as one of the 7 wonders of the world in 2007, is one of the most miraculous works of ancient times. The Colosseum, which is the symbol of Rome and has countless stories, is a frequent destination for millions of tourists every year.

This structure, which contains painful memories for Christianity, still has an important place for the Catholic Church. Every year before Easter, a lantern procession is held in the Amphitheater in memory of the Christians who died there.

Share

The Colosseum or Flavianus is an oval-shaped Amphitheater in Rome, the capital of Italy.
