The pass is located in the Otorten locality of the Ural Mountains, located at the extreme points of Russia. It is known as the “Passage of the Dead” due to a tragic event in the passage. Student Igor Alekseyevich Dyatlov and 9 of his friends died in this passage. The name of the group leader, Igor Dyatlov, was given to the gate. Regarding the incident that took place in 1959, interesting findings regarding the cause of death of the mountaineers were found, but the exact cause could not be found. Many books have been written and movies have been made about this event.

In the researches conducted on the deceased mountaineers, it was determined that the mountaineers cut the walls of the tent with a knife and left the tent abruptly. While some of the climbers were wearing normal clothes, some were found only with underwear and no shoes. Examination of the corpses revealed fractures in the skulls of three of them and the ribs of the other two. In addition, it has been determined that mountaineers are exposed to an unknown source of radiation. Since then, various mysterious events have occasionally occurred in the region, but it is still one of the destinations that visitors want to go to.

The Incident at the Dyatlov Pass

On January 28, 1959, 9 students from the Ural Technical University set out for a 2-week trip in the Ural mountains. The place they plan to go is one of the most difficult places to climb. But since Dyatlov and his friends are very experienced in mountaineering, this journey was exciting for them. There are many dangers and freezing cold on the route they choose, but they are extremely confident.

After the trip started, everything was going well, the climbers were taking a break and taking pictures. Climbers, moving within the framework of a certain route, had to reach Vizhai, the last stop of the trip, and telegraph from there to sports clubs. The telegram or news that was supposed to be sent by the group leader Dyatlov did not reach the teams. As there was no news, the mountaineers began to be searched. The research was supported by mountaineering teams, security forces and helicopters from above. After six days of search, the bodies of the mountaineers were found.

Destroyed tents were found 10 kilometers from the intended destination. Later, 2 lifeless bodies with only underwear were found near the campsite. After detailed studies in the region, 3 more dead bodies were found. It is an inexplicable event why mountaineers stand in their underwear in a minus 30 degree cold environment. In addition, the clothes of the mountaineers were found intact inside the tent.

In the first stage, only the bodies of 5 people from the group were found, and after a 2-month search, the bodies of the remaining 4 people were found. They died similarly at a distance of 75 meters from the first bodies found. The corpses are clothed but interestingly dressed in each other’s clothes. Upon the incident, it was thought that the mountaineers were in a state of panic and did not know what they were doing. Although the cause of death of the mountaineers was determined as hypodermia, why they were in that state has not been resolved. The impact marks encountered are not serious enough to be life-threatening. Some of the corpses found no scars, their eyes slipped, the tongue of one was cut off, and some of the ribs were broken. No accident or attack related to the death of the mountaineers was mentioned, but it was confirmed that all of them had suffered a great trauma. What it is that scares them so much remains a mystery.

After the examinations made on the corpses, it was thought that the damage caused could not be done by a human. No other human traces were found in the immediate or distant surroundings of the area where the bodies were found. Radioactive residues were found on clothing. When the last photograph taken by the mountaineers is examined, an object is seen, but it is not fully understood what it is. The thesis emerged that they were blinded by the blows they received on their skulls. With no signs of injury, it is unlikely that they were attacked by an animal. No solution could be found in the researches carried out for many years, and the event took its place among the events whose veil of secrecy was not lifted.

Allegations Regarding the Cause of Death

The possibility that Russian mountaineers might have been caught in the middle of a nuclear test was emphasized. Because after a nuclear explosion, fractures occur in the human body. However, the fact that the fractures were found in only two corpses was not enough to shed light on the event. Another claim put forward is the possibility of being a Yeti. However, after months of work, no footprints of any living creature were found at the scene. A very logical reason could not be found for the highly professional mountaineers to escape from the tent in the dark of the night.

Some people living nearby said there were strange lights in the sky and screams from the mountain on the night the climbers died, raising suspicions about the event. Later, the crime scene was closed like a quarantine zone, and even a strange piece of metal was found. It turned out that the lights seen in the sky that day and the piece found belonged to the R-7 Semyorka rocket test conducted by the Russians. On this mountain, where the mobile phones and other electronic devices of the mountaineers were ineffective, neither the cameras nor the cameras were confiscated by the Russians. This raises the possibility that mountaineers may witness a practice or experiment that they should not see in that region. However, the Russian government denied this and shared pictures and videos of the bodies.

In 1990, the event was tried to be clarified again and the records were removed from the archive. However, no explanation about the incident could reveal what exactly happened. Yuri Yudin, who was in the team at the time of the incident, left the team due to sprained his foot and came back. Yuri Yudin, then 22 years old, wanted to go to investigate the crime scene, but was not left by the Russian authorities. Yuri Yudin, who was the closest witness to the incident, said that he had dreamed of his friends throughout his life. But before he saw the incident clarified, he too died in 2013.

Share

Dyatlov Pass is known as one of the most dangerous places in the world.
