It is accepted that Erbil Atabegi Muzafferüddin Kökböri was the first person to initiate the Mevlit celebrations. It is said that one of the Egyptian Circassian rulers or the Fatimids of Egypt were the first to start reading the mawlid parables to those gathered for celebration. The word Mevlit is the name given to the literary texts in the form of verse that were written and composed for our Prophet. It is also a literary genre used in Islamic literature.

During the time of the Ottoman Empire, various celebration activities were held in Mevlit oil lamps. However, in this period, some jurists such as Ibnu’l-Haj opposed the entertainments made on the occasion of the oil lamp and the burning of oil lamps on the grounds that they were wasteful. Suyûtî, on the other hand, found it appropriate to recite the Qur’an collectively and to have conversations about his Messenger, Ekrem, during the mawlid nights. They regarded it as a good behavior to be served food after the prayers held on this night.

The word Regaip has passed into our language from an Arabic word. Literally, it means wanting something very much, making an effort to get it. Regarding the night of Regaip, in the narrations about the virtue of the month of Rajab, it is understood that our Master the Prophet gave this month a special value. Over time, the first Friday night of three months was sought after by Muslims and worship began.

Mirac night is one of the other important nights celebrated in the month of Rajab. The word Mirac means to rise, to reach the sky. According to the narration, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was taken from the Kaaba at night and taken to Masjid Aqsa on a mount called Burak. Five daily prayers were made obligatory on this night, Hz. The Prophet was given the good news that the sins of the ummah would be forgiven as long as they did not associate partners with Allah. Miraj is considered a feast for Muslims, an event worthy of celebration.

Berat night means acquittal from sins. The night takes its importance from Allah’s forgiveness of sinners. A group of scholars is of the opinion that the blessed night mentioned in Surah Duhan is the night of Berat. It is known that our Master the Prophet recommended to be busy with worship at night and to fast during the day. On the night of Berat, the people of Mecca revived the night by praying in Masjid al-Haram, circumambulating the Kaaba and reciting the Qur’an. On the night of Berat, oil lamps were lit in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and this tradition was continued for a while. It is said that the first person who started the tradition of distributing sweets to the public on Berat night was the Seljuk Vizier Fahrülmülk.

The most important of these nights is the night of power. In the chapter of al-Qadr mentioned in the Qur’an, the good news is given that this night, when the Qur’an begins to descend, is better than a thousand months. Although there are different rumors about the exact time of the night of power, the opinion that it is the 27th night of the month of Ramadan gains weight. The night of power is the night when the Qur’an was revealed to our Prophet by Allah through Gabriel. The word Qadir has meanings such as “rule, honor, power, exaltation”. The religious night is referred to as “leyletü’l Kadr”.

Share

The oil lamp is literally a lighting tool used in ancient times and illuminating at night.
