Within the scope of the developed project, organic and recyclable capsules were produced. Thanks to the cycle of nature, dead bodies turn into a food source for trees. The aim of the project is to contribute to a sustainable environment instead of normal burial methods.

Within the scope of the project, egg-shaped capsules that can be easily dissolved from the soil were produced instead of wooden coffins. The bodies of the deceased are placed in these capsules and buried in the ground together with the seed of a tree that the person decided while he was alive. In this project, which emerged as an environmentally friendly practice, cutting trees for coffins is prevented.

Thanks to people who prefer to be buried with organic capsules, a new memorial tree is obtained. It is aimed to leave a tree instead of burial for future generations. Thanks to the project, it is thought that the cemeteries will have a new look. Instead of a spooky field of soulless gray stones, it is aimed to leave a vivid and lively memory forest.

Organic capsules, made of a starch plastic, are incorporated into the soil within a short time after they are buried in the soil. The dead body in it will start to rot and turn into nutrients and will be absorbed by the roots of the tree. Thus, people who die will continue to live as part of a tree forever.

Since the developed project is a prohibited application by Italian law, it has not been implemented yet. It has also led to debates among segments of different religions and beliefs. One of the important goals of the project is that people can contribute to the environment even after they die, and that their loved ones will rest in the shade of the growing tree. If the project is released and implemented, thousands of memorial parks will be created instead of cemeteries.

Since ancient times, death has been among the subjects that have kept its mystery. It is a common belief that another life begins, usually after death. In many cultures, it means rebirth and eternity. For this reason, societies believed in life after death and carried out different burial procedures for the dead. In some societies, the dead were cremated and their ashes were hidden or left in the waters. In some, they were buried with their belongings for the purpose of using the deceased people in the next life. Some societies tried to hide the dead by mummification instead of burying them. It is seen that the burial procedures, which have changed since the past, will continue to change.

Share

A project called “Capsula Mundi” was developed by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel in Italy.
