A researcher working at NASA made statements about earthquake light.

The blue light that appeared in the sky in Hatay before the earthquake aroused concern. There is a rustling sound at first, then a blue light appears in the sky. In this video, which was allegedly shot before the earthquake, the sound grew louder and louder as the earthquake’s intensity increased.

The blue light that appeared in the sky before the earthquake has been reported in different countries before. Blue light was also seen in the sky in the 7.1-magnitude Mexico earthquake that occurred in September of 2021. In addition, in the earthquake of 8.1 magnitude in 2017, blue light appeared in the sky again in Mexico.

What is Light Emerging at the Time of an Earthquake?

Making a statement on the subject, Friedemann Freund works as a senior researcher at NASA Ames Research Center. Freund has done a lot of research on the blue lights in the sky, which is called earthquake light. Earthquake light appears in the sky during an earthquake and is considered a very interesting phenomenon. Freund emphasized that these lights can also be seen in colorful flashes and flashing patterns, and these shapes can last for a few seconds or tens of minutes.

There is no definite information about how earthquake lights are formed yet. But according to some estimates by scientists, these lights could be caused by tiny flaws in igneous rock crystals. Crushed under strong stress during seismic activity, these crystals are damaged and peroxygen bonds are broken. Oxygen anions formed as a result of these fractures become ionized and move upwards over the cracks. When these ions diffuse into the atmosphere, they ionize the air, creating a glowing plasma.

Local destruction of the earth’s magnetic field or ionosphere in a tectonic stress area can produce a flare effect. Also, tectonic stress can produce a piezoelectric effect and generate a strong voltage when the quartz-containing rock is compressed in a certain way. This voltage is released into the air and ionizes the air, thereby emitting bright electric light, called the principle of triboluminescence. However, these theories have not yet been fully proven and more research is needed.

Earthquake lights are not common and usually appear before or during larger earthquakes. However, these lights may also appear a few weeks earlier. In the future, the study of earthquake lights may help us predict the occurrence of major earthquakes and reduce their effects.

Share

After the earthquake in Turkey, some social media users shared videos showing a blue light in the sky just before the earthquake.
