In recent years, while the scientific world has been working on the scenario of an asteroid hitting the Earth, various protection methods have been explored to deal with this possibility. The DART project, initiated by NASA in the past months, is a project developed to measure and prevent celestial objects that may pose a potential threat in the future. Thanks to this project, the neutralization of the asteroid identified in the trials was carried out successfully.

An Asteroid That Could Nearly Destroy Earth

According to a study whose results are quite alarming, the probability of an asteroid that could nearly destroy Earth may be much higher than previously thought. This warning was made by James Garvin of the Goddard Space Flight Center. Garvin announced the results of a study that identified four asteroids powerful enough to blow up part of the atmosphere over a million years. The results of this study suggest that the risk may be much greater than scientists previously thought.

James Garvin and his team studied four collision craters using data collected by several Earth-observing satellites. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that previous studies were misinterpreted and that there were larger rings around the craters. If Garvin and his team’s new data are correct, the effects of these craters would be equivalent to an explosion 10 times more powerful than the largest nuclear bomb in history. These results once again highlight the importance of major asteroid collisions that could impact Earth.

Using new high-resolution images of the four craters, James Garvin was able to produce 3D maps of these craters. Focusing on analysis of the area recorded as a nine-mile-wide crater formed by the fall of an asteroid called Pantasma about 800,000 years ago, Garvin claimed in his reanalysis of the crater that it was actually 21 miles wide, with an impact equivalent to 727,000 megatons. Garvin and his team did similar studies on other craters. However, there are different views on the results of these studies. The scientific community does not yet fully agree with Garvin’s claims.

Different Views of Scientists

Bill Bottke, a planetary dynamics expert at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, told Science.org; “I doubt it.
