The history of Anatolia has a rich past bearing the traces of various civilizations. Another ancient people who lived in these lands are the Luwians. However, it is quite difficult to have enough information about the Luwians. For this reason, the Luwian people are described as a mysterious people and some interesting claims are made about them. Among these, there are subjects such as that the Luwians are the People of Light and that the origin of Alevism comes from the Luwians. Others claim that the Luwians are related to aliens. However, it is not clear how true these claims are.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Studies on the Luwians to date show that the Luwians had an important cultural and political power in Anatolia. It is known that the Luwians made important contributions to subjects such as art, architecture and religious beliefs. Like the Hittites, who succeeded in establishing the first central state in Anatolia, the Luwians still have not been resolved from where and how they came to Anatolia.<\/p>\n

According to some, the Luwians migrated to Anatolia from outside. The Luwians are a people who emerged in Anatolia around 2300 BC. Ancient Anatolian peoples, especially the Luwians, played a major role in the emergence of Ancient Greek culture. The Luwians, who lived in the region where the Greeks would settle, created an advanced civilization. Cultural accumulation of the Luwians and Hittites<\/a><\/strong> The transfer they made to other ancient Anatolian peoples, especially to other ancient Anatolian peoples, helped the emergence of the Ancient Greek civilization in a powerful way. The Luwians are a people who exist not only in Western and Southwestern Anatolia, but also in Cilicia and Northern Syria.<\/p>\n

It is known that they spoke a language belonging to the Indo-European Language Group called Luwian. Although the pre-Hittite history of Anatolia has not been fully elucidated, it has been revealed that the Luwians are a society that can be considered as the natives of Anatolia, with the deciphering of the cuneiform scripts found in the ancient capital of the Hittites, Hattusa. While it is mentioned as Luvian \/ Luwian in the cuneiform documents of the Hittites, it is known that the Luwian language continued to exist in Anatolia, although the Hittites’ writing was forgotten after the collapse of the Hittite Empire. It is also stated that the Luwians formed the basis of the language spoken by the Pelasgians.<\/p>\n

It is seen in the Hittite inscriptions that the Luwians were treated as a kind of second-class human being. It has also been claimed that the Trojans also spoke the Luwian language. As a result of the Luwian Studies Foundation’s research, it has been revealed that the Luwians have more settlements in a wider geography than is known. It is stated that 340 settlements belonging to the Late Bronze Age identified in Western Anatolia are more than the total number of known Crete Minoan Civilization, Mycenaean Civilization period Greece and Hittite Kingdom. In the documents found in Hattusha, the capital of the Hittites, and written in Akkadian cuneiform, the region where the Luwian speaking peoples lived was called Luwiya. This language remained in use for at least 900 years and was written in hieroglyphic signs. The Luwian language was spoken throughout Southern and Western Anatolia. Emil Forrer’s ability to read the Luwian language in cuneiform in 1919 was an important step in understanding the Luwian language. Luwian cuneiform was later researched further with the publication of Luwian texts found in Hattusa in 1953 and was associated with the Luwian hieroglyphic script consisting of 520 signs. It is an indisputable fact that a language called Luwian is spoken in Western Anatolia among linguists.<\/p>\n

The fact that some Hattusha kings, who ruled between the 17th and 15th centuries BC, had Luwian origins, indicates that the Luwians had high status. Other king names in this period are generally of Hatti origin, but there are also a few Hittite\/Ne\u015fa origin king names. According to Hittite sources, it is extremely interesting that four kings, who took the names of kings of Luwian origin, came to power by marriage or coup d’etat. This example can also be interpreted as a situation that allows us to understand how the \u201cLuvians\u201d included themselves in the Hattusa aristocracy. The fact that the Luwians included themselves in the Hittite society in this way may also indicate that the Hittite speakers did not see the Luwians as an excluded community.<\/p>\n

Further evidence of Luwian’s high status comes from Old Hittite rituals. These ritual texts contain spells in Hittite, Luwian and sometimes Palaca languages. The analyzed texts underline the multi-ethnic character of the Hattusha Kingdom and show that it was united under a common state cult. A similar practice was not found in the ancient Near East geography. This indicates that the leaders who ruled Hattusha were the pioneers of the world in terms of ethnic diversity.<\/p>\n

Allegations Made About Luwians<\/strong><\/h3>\n

German geoarchaeologist Eberhard Zangger talks about the Luwian people, who have a very ancient culture in Anatolia, in his book called \u201cThe Luwians and the Trojan War\u201d. He argues that these people are ignored by Europe for ideological reasons. According to Zangger, the reason for the Mycenaean kingdom to wage war on Troy is to destroy the Luwians, who established a great empire in the Middle East and destroyed other cultures in the region. Zangger claims that in the end, Troy was also destroyed in this war.<\/p>\n

The Light-Alevi movement, on the other hand, claims that the origin of the term Alevi comes from the Luwians, an ancient Anatolian civilization, and that the word Luwi means “People of Light” in the Hittite language. However, in traditional Alevism, the term Alawite is a word of Arabic origin meaning “belonging to Ali”. However, some sources suggest that the term Alevi derives from the Hebrew word “Al” and also has meanings related to God. There is also information in Ottoman sources that the expression “Taife of Light” was used for some Alevis living in certain regions. According to the Light-Alevis, this situation is interpreted as a sign of the connection between the Luwians and the Alevis.
