This ancient structure is the largest surviving structure from the Romans. It was included in the List of World Heritage Sites in 1987.

The Wall is the second of three fortifications built in England. The first fortification is Gask Ridge, and the third is the Antoninus Wall. All these walls were built to ensure the economic order and security of Great Britain under the control of the Roman Empire. At the same time, it was built to the north in order to protect itself from the invasions of the Scottish tribes. Hadrian’s Wall is the best preserved of the three, and therefore the most famous.

The Reason for Hadrian’s Wall

Hadrian, or as Caesar Trajan, Hadrianus Augustus, was the third of the five Good Emperors and cousin of his predecessor, Trajan. Hadrian left construction projects as the strongest legacy. He founded cities throughout the Balkan Peninsula, Egypt, Anatolia and Greece. Ancient Britain was seen as a mysterious island at the tip of the known world to the Romans. Although Julius Caesar made an attempt to reach its shores in 55-54 BC, the Roman Empire was not able to successfully occupy the island until the summer of 43 AD.

Eventually, Emperor Claudius sent General Aulus Plautius and about 24,000 soldiers to England. In 79 AD they took control of the region that makes up present-day Wales and southern England. However, they encountered fierce resistance from Celtic warriors in the area known as northern England. During these wars, many Roman garrisons in Scotland were attacked and rebelled. Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of Hadrian’s Wall in 122 to strengthen the military defenses in the region. The wall ran from the Solway Firth in eastern England to the south of the River Tyne.

The wall helped protect the Roman army from invasions by Scottish warriors and also provided control of trade. The garrisons on the wall were built to accommodate Roman soldiers and control the activity in the region. Hadrian’s Wall became a symbol of the Roman Empire’s presence in Britain and was considered one of the empire’s most important defensive structures.

Hadrian’s Wall was about 117 km long and about 4.5 meters high. The stones used in the construction of the wall are the stones of the region where the wall was built, and each region has its own stone. A tower was built every 1.5 km of the wall to protect the fortress or area. The towers were also used as watchtowers for the safety of the soldiers walking on the wall. Despite the Romans conquering Scotland, another embankment called the Antoninus Wall was built 17 years after Hadrian’s Wall.

Hadrian’s Wall created a physical and artificial border that was nowhere in the Roman Empire. Thousands of people were involved in this enormous project, which took more than four years to complete. The purpose of the wall was to restrict the movement of raiders in northern Britain and to protect the borders of the empire. Some scholars believe that the wall may also have been used as a means of restricting immigration and movement in and out of Roman territory.

Hadrian’s Wall Construction Process

It took at least 6 years to complete Hadrian’s Wall, which marked the northwestern border of the Roman Empire for nearly 300 years. Roman legionnaires began the construction of the wall from the eastern end. Historians believe the original plan was to build a stone or grass wall surrounded by a wide, deep moat. Each kilometer of the wall would have a sheltered gate, with two observation towers between each gate.

The wall was built of stone blocks, but its dimensions varied along the way. The eastern section was approximately 3 meters wide and 4.2 meters high, while the western section was 6 meters wide and 4.2 meters high. The last 6 kilometers of the wall, both east and west, were built last, reducing the width to just 2.5 meters in this section.

Antonine’s Wall

During the reign of Hadrian’s successor, Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD), a wall was built further north. The Antonine Wall was about half the length of Hadrian’s Wall, although it had more forts than the previous wall. The exact reason for the construction of this new wall is unknown, but some historians believe it indicates that Hadrian’s Wall failed as an effective defensive barrier. Antoninus, like previous emperors, was unable to truly defeat the northern tribes and the construction of the Antoninus Wall was eventually abandoned.

Hadrian’s Wall is a stone embankment that divides modern England in an east-west direction and was built during the Roman Empire.
