Information on the 10 most dangerous lakes in the world is as follows;

1- Monoun Lake

Monoun Lake is a crater lake located in the Oku Volcanic Field in the Western Province of Cameroon. The explosion that took place in the region in 1984 was initially thought as a terrorist attack and approximately 37 people lost their lives. Subsequent research has shown that the main cause of death was due to excessive carbon dioxide emissions in the blast zone. In Monoun Lake, there was a terrible gas explosion and people lost their lives. People living near the lake have experienced skin discoloration, skin burns, and fatal cases of drowning. Volcanic lava when exposed to water is suspected as the cause of Monoun Lake.

2- Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake, located in California, is famous for its natural beauty, but is notorious for emitting toxic gases that kill the surrounding trees. The lake is located next to the rocks of the Mammoth Mountains, which contain high amounts of carbon dioxide. In 1989, most of the trees near Horseshoe Lake died suddenly. Research has shown that toxic gases accumulate under the Mammoth Mountains that erupted during the earthquake, and they originate from the lava beds beneath them. Due to the high carbon dioxide levels in the lake, it poses a danger to humans.

3- Lake Michigan

Located between North America and Canada, Lake Michigan is also known as the “Lake of Lakes” as it is linked to other lakes. The word Michigan is derived from the word “mishigami” and means big water. Lake Michigan is the second largest lake in North America by volume and its scenery is quite impressive. However, it can be dangerous for many people due to the harsh currents and sunken piers in the lake. In October and November, weather conditions deteriorate causing the lake’s rough waves to appear, so traveling on the lake can be particularly deadly during these months.

4- Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks is a lake in the United States and carries a high risk of killing when compared to other dangerous lakes. Due to the E. coli bacteria it contains, the lake poses a threat that can cause food poisoning and other deadly diseases. E. coli bacteria accumulate in the lake due to pollution caused by wastewater flowing into the lake.

5- Karachay Lake

Karaçay Lake is known as one of the deadliest lakes in the world. Also called “Karachai” or “Karachaj”, the lake is located in Russia between the Ural Mountains. There is a dump in the area where radioactive and nuclear waste has been stored since 1951. The radiation levels are so high that a mere visit can damage internal organs, and staying near the lake for even an hour can be fatal. The waste is located under the lake and its radiation levels can cause more deadly effects than nuclear radiation.

6- Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a deadly lake located between Democratic Rwanda and the Republic of Congo. It is on the list of the 10 Most Dangerous Lakes in the World. The lake is covered with numerous chemical layers, consisting largely of methane and carbon dioxide. The presence of these layers causes the lake to be poisonous and dangerous. Since 1951, the pollution of the lake has increased so much that some companies have started to extract methane from the lake.

7- Lake Rakshastal

Although Rakshastal Lake in Tibet is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, it is among the Top 10 Most Dangerous Lakes in the World due to its inability to support life due to its heavy salt content. The absence of plants or aquatic animals in the lake was interpreted by the nearby villagers as toxic. There are also legends of demon-like egoistic kings who do not allow the existence of other selfish living organisms in the lake. The name of the lake comes from the word “Rakshastal” meaning “Darkness”.

8- Lake Nyos

Lake Nyos is a volcanic lake located in the northwest of Cameroon. The lake is inactive today, but the huge lava flows in it are proof of that. The lake is lethal because the water is present in the form of carbon dioxide acid, which can burn human skin. On August 21, 1986, a limnic eruption at Lake Nyos killed 1,746 people and 3,500 animals. Today, a single jolt could cause the lake to spread into the village streams and harm the villagers.

9- Lake Jokulhlaup

Lake Jokulhlaup is a term in Iceland that refers to active glaciers. This formation, which occurs as a result of glacial melting, is found in glacial regions. The lake is protected in areas where volcanic lava partially enters the glacial zone. However, this protection can cause a hydrostatic explosion when water overflows above the threshold. The Jokulhlaup eruption happens very quickly and can cause extensive damage to nearby areas and endanger human life.

10- Lake Natron

Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Arusha Region is located in the eastern branch of the Gregory Rift. The lake is part of the Lake Natron Basin, an international Ramsar Territory wetland. Fed by the southern Ewaso Ng’iro River and mineral-rich hot springs, the lake is quite shallow and less than three meters deep. A high level of evaporation takes place in the lake and as a result, minerals such as natron (sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona (sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate) accumulate in the lake. The alkalinity of the lake can reach a pH greater than 12, and the surrounding bedrock consists of alkaline, sodium-dominated trachyte lavas that emerged during the Pleistocene epoch. This allows the lake to concentrate into a caustic alkaline brine. Around the lake, a large number of stone-like creatures have been encountered. According to the legend told, living things that touch this lake turn into stone.
