These lands include the present-day Yemen region. There are opinions among historians suggesting that Ethiopia was also a part of this region. The Saba civilization was active between approximately 950 BC and 250 AD. Although there are doubts about the existence of this civilization in modern archeology circles, it has been recognized through historical sources and cultural narratives.

The earliest sources about Sheba (Saba) are found in the royal annals of the reign of Sargon II, King of Assyria. Other than that, inconsistencies are observed in the information. Due to the inadequacy of archaeological studies and the difficulties in the region, sufficient data could not be obtained. The first rulers of this kingdom, which is believed to have been founded by Karib Will Watar in the 7th and 6th centuries BC, are considered to be members of the Makron dynasty.

The geographer and astronomer Ptolemy described this region as “the land of happy people”. The Arabs, on the other hand, called it “green”. The origins of Sheba’s people are uncertain and their capital is known to be the Maghreb. The Kingdom built the Maghreb Dam, one of the largest and most important dams in ancient history. According to sources, the construction of the Maghreb Dam, which started in 800 BC, covered a process that lasted about 300 years.

This civilization carried out agricultural activities thanks to irrigation systems under control. Maghreb Dam holds the secret of providing irrigation even in desert temperatures by minimizing evaporation.

Sheba generally lived peacefully with its neighbors, and trade was one of its major sources of income. The main export products included exotic spices, aromatic resins, ointments and peculiar-smelling incense. The approximately 1931 km long road known as the Incense Route was held by this kingdom. Exports were made to Babylon, Memphis, Gaza port and even Qani ports of India.

Incense from the land of Saba was used in temples of many different countries to be offered to the gods. These incense were especially indispensable to Egypt, as they exported the dyes used to rub eyes. These dyes were used not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to keep flies away and protect the eyes against the harmful effects of the sun.

The religion of the Saba people was similar to the Mesopotamian religions. They worshiped the sun, moon and stars. Saba was an important center for astrological wisdom, and the king and queen were considered the chief astronomers in this field. The national god of Saba was Ilmukah (comparable to the Moon god Sin in Babylon and Assyria), and the people of Saba considered themselves the children of Ilmukah. Starting from the 4th century AD, they adopted the cult of the “Benevolent”, which is considered the prototype of the monotheistic religion.

Saba society was a matriarchal society. Women were considered the heads of the household, and a woman could marry more than one man. Likewise, she could divorce their husbands at will.

The collapse of Saba’s reign followed the collapse of the Maghreb Dam (estimated at AD 542). The dam destruction, which is called “punishment” in the Qur’an, caused the Arim flood, causing the destruction of cultivated areas. After this disaster, a rapid desertification process started. As a result of the desertification of the lands, the people left the lands and most of them migrated to Ethiopia. This flood disaster was also confirmed by the German archaeologist Werner Keller. The land of Saba was buried deep in history and forgotten after this disaster.

Belkıs, Queen of Sheba

The most influential and well-known figure of the Sheba (Saba) reign is the Queen of Sheba, Belkıs, who is identified with her name. Belkis played an important role in tracing the reign of Sheba, but although he is thought to have lived in the 10th century BC, actual information remains uncertain. The available data on the life of Belkis presents a texture where facts and legends are intertwined.

Based on the researches carried out by archaeologists, it is thought that Belkıs, known for beauty, power, justice and intelligence, lived at the same time as King Solomon (the prophet Solomon). According to the stories, Belkıs’ father married a genie, and it is rumored that the name of this genie, who is considered to be his mother, is “Reyhane”. Although it is not mentioned in the Bible, it has been called by different names in various cultures and belief systems.

In Ethiopia, the story of this ruler, called Makeda, is expressed by the word “Makeda”, which means “not this way, not like this”. In Islamic culture, it is known as Belkıs and its name is also mentioned in the Qur’an. In addition, it is seen that it is also referred to by different names such as Lilith, Nikaule or Nicaula (Nikola) in some sources. The story of Queen of Saba Belkıs focuses on the wealth, beauty and story of the Kingdom of Saba, which is thought to belong to the prehistoric period. It is widely rumored that Belkis is half human and half jinn, and that her feet are upside down, hoof-shaped and hairy.

Hz. Prophet Solomon and Belkis

According to Islamic sources, King Solomon heard and wondered about Belkıs’ fame and wisdom. Thereupon, he summoned Belkis to Jerusalem. The fame of Sultan Süleyman went to the ears of Belkıs. He arrives in a caravan of visitors loaded with spices, precious stones, and large quantities of gold (40 tons of gold according to the Old Testament). Sultan Süleyman’s aim is to convert Belkıs, who worships the stars, to a monotheistic religion. This visit and meeting represents the interaction of different faiths and cultures.

According to the story, Sultan Süleyman, who wants to see if Queen Belkıs’ feet are actually hooved or hairy like a goat, arranges a special trial. He places a glass floor where Belkis will pass and fills the bottom with water and fish. When Belkis passes over this water, he sees the Sultan standing against him. She lifts her skirt slightly, thinking that the water will run through her. This moment is an opportunity for Sultan Süleyman to closely observe Belkıs’ feet. On this occasion, Sultan Süleyman sees with his own eyes that Belkıs’ feet are not hoofed and goat-like hair as described. Sultan Süleyman realizes the true appearance of Belkıs and this moment between them is said to be a turning point in understanding their beliefs and differences.

According to many narratives, rumors are widespread that she married Sultan Suleiman. It is mentioned that this relationship is only for commercial and diplomatic purposes. It is also among the rumors that Sultan Süleyman provided financial support to his temple. However, according to some rumors, a deep bond was formed between these two wise rulers and they got married and united their lives. But Queen Belkis cannot stay in Jerusalem any longer; because a country to rule and a people to lead awaits him. These obligations and responsibilities prevented the love of Belkıs and Süleyman from staying within the boundaries of the real world.

In another case; one day St. Solomon was disturbed when he could not see the hudhud, one of the birds that belonged to him, and the next hudhud informed him that a queen lived in the land of Saba and that its people worshiped the sun. Thereupon, Hz. Solomon wrote a letter to invite this queen to monotheism and sent her back with a hudhud bird.

Belkıs, Queen of Saba, Hz. When he received a letter from Süleyman, he believed that it was necessary to maintain good relations with his advisors and sent him valuable gifts. However, Solomon ignored the worldly affairs and rejected the gifts and invited Belkıs to his palace. Belkıs accepted this invitation and gave the order to protect his throne very well when he set out.

Knowing this, Mr. Solomon had the throne brought to his palace by the jinn. Throne of Hz. Belkıs, who saw it in Süleyman’s palace, could not believe how it happened and was astonished. After this incident, Belkis stated that he surrendered to God. Then Belkis and Hz. Prophet Solomon got married.

In today’s Torah (I.Kings IX.-19), Belkıs, Hz. After the death of his father, he became the leader of his country, both as a prophet and king. He also served as a high judge. According to the viewpoint of the Qur’an, Hz. Although he acknowledges Solomon as a prophet, the modern-day Torah only mentions him as a king.

God, He bestowed many blessings on Solomon. The language of birds was taught to him (Neml p.16). The wind is also at his disposal (Anbiya p.81). Some of the jinn even served him. Copper and tar, Hz. Solomon was the fourth ruler of the Kingdom of Israel, as well as an important figure, king, and leader of the Jewish religion. He was the son of King David and Bathsheba and thus descended from royalty. Hz.
