It was made in 1931. It was designed to commemorate the liberation of Brazil from the Portuguese occupation. The statue was included in the 7 wonders of the world in 2007. It is the only statue in the list of the seven wonders. The Christ the Redeemer statue was designed as a symbol of universal peace and love.

The statue of Christ, the savior of the world, is a gigantic statue with arms outstretched. The long arms of the statue are made as symbols to bring everyone together. It is also a sign of local people’s devotion to Jesus. It is located on the Corcovado Mountain, which has an altitude of 710 meters in the city. It has become one of the most important symbols of the city. It is visited by an average of over 1 million people per year.

Location and Features of the Statue

In 1899, the church and state were separated and the Brazilian Republic was established. Thereupon, fears among Catholics that the country would deteriorate began to increase. In order to improve the country, a lot of work has been done, but it has not met the expectations.

The Roman Catholic archbishop of Rio De Janeiro suggested that a statue of Jesus be placed on a high place for the healing movement. Upon the acceptance of the proposal, work began on the construction of the statue. It was thought that the statue should be in the form of a command center, which can be seen from anywhere in the city. Accordingly, the most suitable place was determined. On April 4, 1922, the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the independence of Brazil, the foundations of the statue were laid with the participation of the Pope.

The person who designed the project of the statue is Heitor Silva Costa. French sculptor Paul Landowski is the person who brought it to life. Its construction took about 5 years. Construction material, concrete was used in the construction of the statue, and soapstone was used to cover it. Soap stone gives shine. It makes it shine brightly in the moonlight at night. At the base of the statue is a large temple. The total weight of the statue is 635 tons. Its head alone is 3.75 meters high and weighs 30 tons. The width of its arms is 28 meters. The height of the statue is 38 meters with a platform at the foot.

Over time, the sculpture has been exposed to external influences and worn out. In 1980, major cleaning and maintenance works were carried out. Maintenance is carried out periodically. In 2003, some improvement works were carried out in order to provide easy access by arranging the surroundings of the statue. Escalators, elevators and walkways have been built. The lower part of the mountain where the statue is located is Tijuca National Park. It has been a frequent destination for those who want to see the statue and have a good time. It is not known whether the statue of Jesus met the expectations. But by becoming the symbol of the country, its contribution to the economy has been great.

Share

The Christ the Redeemer statue is located in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
