Ephesus Ancient City, Where Mary Died

The ancient city of Ephesus is one of the first known settlements. It has hosted many civilizations throughout history. It is located in an advantageous area due to its location. It has the feature of seeing a bridge between Asia and Europe. The ancient city is located in Selçuk district of İzmir province in Turkey. The city, which remained silent for a long time after being home to many civilizations, has come to the fore again with its story mentioned in the Bible and the Qur’an.

The history of the ancient city of Ephesus dates back to the 6th millennium BC. But its first form, which could mean a city, was transformed by the Hittites. Afterwards, it grew with immigration from Greece. It was destroyed several times in the process, relocated and rebuilt in its present location by the commanders of Alexander the Great.

Hz. Arrival of Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus, to Ephesus

Hz. Mother of the Prophet Jesus It is said that Mary died here and an important part of the Bible was written here. In addition, one of the 7 wonders of the world is in this city. There is the largest known theater of the ancient age in the city. It has approximately 25 thousand people. There are statues of women at the entrance. The four female statues are symbols of wisdom, virtue, destiny and knowledge.

The ancient city of Ephesus has a great importance for Christianity today. The reason for this is Hz. The mother of Jesus, Hz. It is believed that Meryem spent the last years of her life here. The event is as follows, While the prophet Jesus was arrested by the Jews in Jerusalem and executed by crucifixion by the Roman rulers, his mother Hz. He entrusted Mary to his favorite apostle, John. John and St. After Mary stayed in Jerusalem for a while, they came to Ephesus.

Ephesus was one of the largest and most important cities in the world of the period. Its people worship the Greek gods. The Jewish population has an important place. With the arrival of a few apostles to the city, Christianity began to spread secretly. There is no clear information about Mary’s days in Ephesus. However, on a high hill near the city of Ephesus, there is the Virgin Mary’s house and Church, where it is believed that she secluded herself in the forest and spent the last years of her life praying here. It is thought that many Christian people came to this city and fulfilled their pilgrimage. Popes visit the house of Virgin Mary from time to time.

The Pilgrimage Center of Christianity The Temple of Artemis

There is one of the most important temples in history in the ancient city of Ephesus. It is the Temple of Artemis, which is considered one of the 7 wonders of the world. Today, there are only ground remains of the temple. In those years, popes from all over Anatolia worshiped in this temple and fulfilled their pilgrimage duties. The more important the Kaaba is for Islam, the more important the Temple of Artemis is for Christianity.

In fact, according to what is told in the Bible, a silversmith led a rebellion in Ephesus due to the spread of Christianity and the big theater gathered thousands of people. He said that with rebel Christianity, the Temple of Artemis would lose its importance, and this would collapse the city’s economy. Thereupon, most of the Christians in the city were expelled from Ephesus.

The words of the person who started the rebellion are mentioned in the Bible as follows; ”O Ephesians, does anyone not know that the city of Ephesus is the keeper of the great Temple of Artemis and the holy stone that fell from the sky? Based on this statement, it is thought that a meteorite was preserved in the Temple of Artemis. Or the Temple of Artemis was built on the spot where this meteorite fell. Perhaps the reason behind the Ephesians conferring such holiness and power of worship on this goddess is the concrete knowledge that this stone came from the sky.

the House of the Virgin Mary

Virgin Mary

ancient theater

The Temple of Artemis

Share

The ancient city of Ephesus is one of the first known settlements.
