Described as an “extraordinary sight” by park officials, this mysterious blue pool is described as a beauty that has never been touched by human hands.

Even though the pool is surrounded by white frozen rocks, the water in it is quite clear. Expedition leader Max Wisshak thinks the water derived from ancient rainwater and seeped through the limestone. The formations at the bottom of the pool appear to be “pool fingers” that appear to be fully evolved colonies of bacteria, meaning they may have evolved completely free of human intervention.

“This pool has been isolated for hundreds of thousands of years and has never seen light until now,” said Rodney Horrocks of Carlsbad Caverns. Such pristine pools are of great scientific interest because water samples are relatively free of contamination. The microbial organisms living in these pools may have evolved only in this environment. Considering sources of contamination that may come from outside, the fact that Lechuguilla Cave is located in a protected wild area provides a great advantage in this respect. “There is also the possibility of contamination from air aerosols, but the newly discovered pool is almost completely untouched,” he said.

Scientists have discovered a mysterious pool of water containing a milk-like liquid that has never been seen by humans before, deep inside a cave in New Mexico.
