These huge columns are made of very neatly made geometric hexagonal shapes. Nearly 40,000 columns between 30 and 50 centimeters were found by researchers. Columns made of basalt and andesite stones are located on a plateau. This place, which has an extraordinary appearance, has been the subject of many legends by the people living in it. Who made these stones and how they were made has been the subject of research.

The Formation of the Giants’ Sidewalk and the Legends Told:

Legend has it that a giant named Fionn MacCool fell in love with a Scottish girl millions of years ago. In order for this girl to cross the sea and reach him, he built the huge road up to the Irish coast. According to another legend, the Irish giant named Fionn MacCool made this road to reach his biggest enemy, the sea monster Gaulle, which lives on the island. It is thought that these stones, which went all the way to Staffa Island, were destroyed and mixed into the sea after erosion.

The hexagonal columns, which have a honeycomb-shaped appearance, are arranged in such a way that there is no gap between them. This formation, which has the appearance of a bee honeycomb, seems to have been made by human hands, except for a natural event. A lot of research has been done about this place, which has a special appearance.

50 million years ago northern Ireland and Scotland experienced a geologically active period. As a result of the researches, it is thought that this formation may have emerged at that time. During the period when volcanic activities were intense, this place was in the form of a lava lake. During the flow of lava towards the ocean, it encounters cool waters and cools and forms this shape. As these lavas cooled, they began to compress and crack. After shrinkage and cracking, these hexagonal shapes emerged. The columns are approximately 300 meters long and 150 meters wide. It is not possible to come across this formation anywhere else in the world.

Share

The Giants Causeway Coast, located in the Antrim Region of Ireland, has been the subject of many legends.
