This island was discovered by sailors and became the subject of research by historians. There are various theories about the history of the island and the statues found. Giant statues on the coastline have a history dating back 10,000 years. This place was considered the “Center of the World” in ancient times. The mystery of how the civilizations living here disappeared is trying to be solved.

The region is famous as the most distant place in the world from land. It is located 3600 kilometers off the coast of Chile. The Dutch sailor Jacob Roggeveen set foot on the island for the first time in 1722, on Easter Day. For this reason, it was named “Easter Island”. It has been observed that the gigantic sculptures on the island were made with a fine workmanship. Considering the conditions of the period, how this was done by a primitive tribe is among the unsolved issues. 288 of the statues are on the stone platform, while the other statues are scattered in different parts of the island.

Information About the Island:

Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl, in his research in the 1950s, argued that the islanders were South American. However, when the bones collected from the island were analyzed, it was revealed that the people belonged to the Polynesians who came to this island from the islands in the Pacific Ocean. As a result of the analyzes made on the island soil, it was discovered that the island was first set foot in 318. Orthodox Archaeologists are of the opinion that Polynesians, who were lost at sea at that time, may have settled on this island.

As the studies on the island increase, different information emerges. One of them is that the island is a continuation of a large piece of land. According to the research, 12 thousand years ago, before the glaciers melted, the water level in the ocean was lower and it is accepted that the region is an island chain extending to the Andes Mountains. It is estimated that with the melting of the glaciers, a part of Easter Island was submerged and turned into an island.

Some researchers think that Easter Island belongs to an ancient civilization that explored the sky thousands of years ago, based on mythological information. Due to its location, the island has the special position of places considered sacred in the world. It is estimated that there is an observatory on the island. It is thought that it is used to detect disasters that may occur in future meteor strikes and ground movements.

It is believed that the statues on the island provide fertility in agriculture and increase food resources. For this reason, it is thought that hundreds of Moai statues were made by order of the ruling class. When the soils taken from the region are analyzed; It has been found that it is suitable for growing bananas, sweet potatoes and tropical plants. The island has extremely fertile and mineral-rich soil.

It is thought that after the discovery of the island by the Europeans, the people who came to the island brought many epidemics. It is estimated that the people of the island are extinct due to smallpox, dysentery and similar infectious diseases. At the same time, extinction is predicted due to the disappearance of trees due to climate change and the reduction of plant species. How his people disappeared is still the subject of research. The island was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. The island hosts many tourists with its huge statues and the mysteries it carries.

Share

There are 974 unsolved Easter statues on Easter Island in the South Pacific Ocean.
