These fruiting bodies produce spores that are dispersed into the air and can infect other ants in the colony, causing a continuous cycle of infection and death.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus and the concept of \u201czombie\u201d is based on the fungus&#8217; ability to manipulate the behavior of its host ant, similar to how zombies are depicted in popular culture. It was previously known that this dangerous fungus secretes a tissue that causes atrophy in the ant&#8217;s mandibular muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author, PhD candidate from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Basel <strong>Maridel Fredericksen<\/strong>, <em>&#8216;Altered host behavior is an expanded phenotype of microbial parasite genes expressed through the host body.  But it was unknown how the fungus controls these effects that manipulate the host&#8217;s behavior.&#8217; <\/em>explains.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used 3D visualization using electron microscopy to determine the location, abundance and activity of fungi in the ants&#8217; bodies.  Tissue pieces were taken at 50 nanometer resolution and imaged by a machine that could repeat the fragmentation and visualization process 2,000 times over a 24-hour period.  Using artificial intelligence to parse this data, researchers developed an algorithm and examined how much of the insect remained an ant and how much turned into a fungus.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12875\" src=\"https:\/\/kasifiz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Zombi-Karinca-Mantari6.webp\" data-lazy- title=\"\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/kasifiz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Zombi-Karinca-Mantari6.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12875\" title=\"\"><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<p>The results were quite disturbing.  O. unilateralis cells proliferated throughout the ant&#8217;s body and spread from the head and chest to the abdomen and legs.  Moreover, these fungal cells were connected to each other in a way that controlled the ant&#8217;s movements by establishing a cooperative biological network between them.  &#8216;Most of the host&#8217;s cells had turned into fungal cells.  In fact, this creature was now a mushroom disguised as an ant.&#8217;  says Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>But most surprisingly, the parasitic fungus did not infiltrate the carpenter ant&#8217;s brain.  Normally in animals, the brain controls behavior by sending signals to the muscles.  &#8216;But according to our research, the fungus was environmentally controlling the behavior of its host.  &#8216;Just like a puppeteer moves his puppet up and down, this mushroom was manipulating the ant&#8217;s muscles.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Scientists realized that there was a much more complex situation here than they thought.  The fungus may have been controlling the ant by secreting compounds that could act as neuromodulators.  \u201cThis means that this fungus may produce bioactive compounds that could be interesting for new drug discovery,\u201d said Charissa de Bekker, an entomologist at the University of Central Florida.  That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m so excited about this work!\u201d  said.<\/p>\n<p>Bekker also published his new research on this subject.  He studied the molecular clock of the fungus O. unilateralis to see whether circadian rhythms, and thus biological clocks, are an important aspect of parasite-host interactions studied by biologists.  Not only did he prove that the fungus has a molecular clock, he also found that it results in the daily oscillation of certain genes.  This fungus specifically activated genes that code for proteins secreted during the night.
