Scientific excavations began in the 1970s when oil prices dropped and mining became uneconomic.

After commercial oil shale mining ended in 1971, a cement plant built at the pit in 1974 failed and the area was initially reserved for use as a landfill. However, resistance from the local population prevented these plans, and in 1991 the state of Hesse purchased the area for scientific access. Since then, amateur collectors have received permission to collect fossils and these collections have contributed to scientific studies. In 1996, previously collected fossils were made available to the public again and made available to science.

Geological Features and Fossil Preservation of the Messel Pit

Messel Pit, It covers an area of approximately 0.7 km² and the oil-shale deposit in this region went down to a depth of 190 m. During the Eocene period, this area was 10° further south than today and was surrounded by a tropical, humid subtropical forest ecosystem. It is formed as a result of the accumulation of mud and dead plants in the lake bed under anoxic conditions. oil shaleprovided an excellent environment for fossil preservation.

This process makes the Messel Pit a Harikavat-Lagerstätte (area providing excellent fossil preservation). Oxygen levels near the lake’s surface are low, but toxic gases have accumulated at depth, causing the death of aquatic species. The fossils are extraordinarily well preserved in these conditions.

During the Eocene period Messel Pit The surrounding area was a geologically active region.
