German-controlled Continental Films was founded soon after. Director Alfred Greven, a member of Joseph Goebbels’ inner circle, was appointed as the head of the company. The aim was clear: to use cinema as a propaganda tool.

young at that time Belgian illustrator Peyo (real name Pierre Culliford) He was working as a projectionist in Brussels. He was a fan of fantasy films, but often had to show propaganda productions.

The film Les visiteurs du soir, released in 1942, deeply affected Peyo. In this dark tale set in the Middle Ages, two messengers sent by the devil to earth turned towards good over time, and eventually the devil himself intervened. According to some critics, the film was an allegory of the Nazi occupation. Although the director refused, the production managed to bypass censorship.

This atmosphere — occupation, propaganda, allegory, hidden messages — paved the way for the intertwining of fantasy and political symbolism in the mind of a young illustrator.

Birth of Little Blue Beings

Post-war, Peyo worked at the animation studio Compagnie Belge d’Actualités. Here he saw designs of elves wearing flowers. Later named Johan et Pirlouit Created a medieval-themed comic.

In the adventure “La Flûte à Six Trous,” published in 1958, a magic flute appeared that caused people to dance uncontrollably. The creators of the flute were small, blue, mysterious beings: Les Schtroumpfs.

The word “Schtroumpf” comes from Peyo saying at a dinner, “Can you pass the salt?” It was a made-up word that he accidentally said while trying to say. In the Dutch translation it became “Smurf” and the world knew it by this name.

The color blue was his wife Janine Culliford’s suggestion. Green would disappear in nature, red would be too noticeable. All that was left was blue.

Originally thought of as side characters, the Smurfs gained unexpected popularity. It is said that this group, consisting of a hundred men and only one woman, was governed by strict rules, those who opposed it disappeared, and the leader was arrested when one member escaped and went to the police.

According to this story, a Belgian writer heard about this incident in 1958 and got the inspiration for The Smurfs from there.

However, there is a critical point here:
There are no reliable historical, archival or academic records to support this narrative. There is no confirmed data on such a cult case neither in the German police archives nor in the newspapers of the period.

So this story is most likely a modern urban legend.

Are Symbols Really Innocent?

When you look at the Smurfs universe more carefully, some structural elements stand out. When these elements are taken out of context, It has features that may evoke an authoritarian or closed community model. But the direction of interpretation depends on how you read the symbols.

The sole leader figure – Papa Smurf

Baba Sirin is the oldest, wisest and decision maker in the village. Wearing red clothes distinguishes him from others. This situation is read by some commentators as a symbol of “sole authority”.
But within the narrative, Papa Smurf is not an absolute dictator; It is a guide, not a punitive one. He is the archetype of a sage who is consulted in times of crisis. It is a modern version of the “white-bearded guide” figure in fairy tales.

The only female character – Smurfette

At the beginning, there is only Smurfette in the village. From today’s perspective, this situation can be seen as problematic in terms of gender representation.
However, Smurfette’s emergence carries the theme of transformation within the narrative: While she was initially created with malicious intent, she evolves into an independent character over time. The addition of other female Smurfs to the universe after the 1980s shows that this balance has changed. In other words, the structure is not fixed and dogmatic; is open to transformation.

Collective life and common identity

The Smurfs live in a village setting where private property or individual ambition is not prominent. Everyone has a talent and produces in that field. This structure can be perceived as a “closed commune” when viewed from the outside.
However, in the story, this system is based on division of labor and solidarity, not oppression. No one is forcibly made the same; Chef Smurf cooks because he loves it, Glasses Smurf is a pedant because he is. This model is more of a utopian village depiction.

Using properties instead of names

Most Smurfs do not have personal names; They are remembered by their character traits (such as Sleepy Smurf, Sulky Smurf). This may give the impression of a system in which the identity of the individual is erased.
However, the aim here is not to destroy the identity, but to define the character quickly and clearly in the children’s narrative. This method is common in the fairy tale tradition. The feature is not the suppression of the character but its humorous exaggeration.

Peyo’s POV

Its creators, Peyo, state that when designing this world, they did not create a dark allegory, but imagined a peaceful community:

“I wanted my little characters to be reassuring and kind, not evil. They are not heroes; they just form a nice community to live with. They practice the principles of equality, freedom and brotherhood.”

This statement is not an authoritarian sect model of the Smurfs village; It shows that it is constructed as an idealized, conflict-free solidarity society.

Conclusion: Commentary Sees Wherever It Looks

The same symbols can be read in two different ways:

Single leader → Cult of authority

or → Wise guide archetype

Collective life → Suppression of individuality

or → Solidarity utopia

Whether the Smurfs are “scary” depends on the historical and psychological lens through which we examine the symbols.
