Since volcanoes are generally encountered in different geographies, being in the middle of the desert has been the subject of research for many years. There are many theories to explain the existence of the volcano. One of these; It is believed that it emerged in the collision of continents in ancient times.

Karl Moritz von Beurmann and Gerard Rohlfs were the first to discover the volcano in the 1860s, but they never visited the area. He is thought to have discovered this crater while on his way to Kufra. Due to captivity, he had the opportunity to tell about his crater adventure a few years later. Later, Ardito Desio, an Italian geologist, is known to have reached Wawan Namus after a long camel ride. After his visit to the crater, the volcano was first geologically introduced in 1935.

After the introduction of the volcano, many scientists visited.
