The meteorite struck the Yucatan Peninsula in present-day Mexico, creating the Chicxulub Crater about 200 kilometers in diameter and 20 kilometers deep. After the explosion caused by the impact, the climate changed radically, and 75 percent of living things, including dinosaurs, disappeared. Scientists state that such collisions, which occur as a result of the collision of asteroids in the solar system with the earth, may also occur in the future.

In research led by the University of Texas, the sediments contained in a 130-meter section excavated from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico were examined. Investigations reveal that the dinosaurs were destroyed as a result of the meteorite impact. Later, with the collapse of the sides of the pit, the area reached 200 kilometers. The center of the crater collapsed again through recoil, forming an inner ring. The Chicxulub Crater, buried under the sediments, is no longer visible on the earth’s surface.

Evidence of Meteorite Crashing into Chicxulub Crater

There are many findings that the meteorite hit the Chicxulub Crater, which was discovered in 1991. It is estimated that with the impact of the meteorite, great fires and tsunamis occurred in the world. In the soil layer in the crater, there are quartz grains deformed by the high shock pressure after a giant explosion. Soot grains, which are thought to have spread all over the world with the effect of the explosion, are found in many regions of the world.

There are large amounts of rolled rock deposits formed after a large tsunami around the Gulf of Mexico. It is estimated that these rocks were dispersed to different parts of the world with the effect of the tsunami. Rocks found in the Gulf have been found in the Caribbean and many other places.

Astronomers have mapped a large number of asteroids orbiting the earth. As a result of the statistical evaluations, it has been revealed that a meteorite with a size of 10 kilometers can hit the earth every 100 million years. Researches support that such a meteorite may have hit the earth 65 million years ago.

Information Obtained from the Section Extracted from the Crater

The researchers excavated a 130-meter section of the crater by drilling off the Chicxulub Harbor. This section, which was very well preserved, contains remains from the first day of the period he called the Cenozoic Age (Age of Mammals). Based on the content of the section, scientists had an idea about what happened right after the meteorite impact. 20 meters below the section contains glassy debris. This part formed the molten rock, which was formed by the heat and pressure of the impact, which spread to the bottom of the crater in the seconds and minutes following the impact. In the part above it, there are pieces of molten rock. These are the particles that are formed by the spreading of sea water on the hot material in the explosions that occur after the impact.

It is estimated that with the impact of the impact, the sea water was drawn first, then came back and came into contact with hot substances and caused a violent reaction. This reaction is similar to the reaction seen when magma rising to the surface in volcanoes meets seawater. It has been observed that the sea water that continues to come has filled the crater and therefore the upper 80-90 meters of the section contain all kinds of debris coming from the water.

The top part of the section contains the traces of the tsunami after the impact. Scientists think that the impact caused huge waves that reached hundreds of kilometers from the crater. The outgoing waves brought the debris found in those areas on the way back, and these debris formed the top layer of the 130-meter section. Professor Sean Gulick of the University of Texas says that all this corresponds to the first day of the impact. Professor; “Tsunami moves with jet speed. “A good 24 hours is a good time for the waves to propagate outward and come back,” he explains.

How Did the Dinosaurs Extinct With the Meteorite Impact?

The sediments in the uppermost layer of the section contain coal as the remnant of the fires caused by the impact. However, no sulfur was found anywhere in the 130-meter section. However, in the section, sulfide-containing minerals emitted into the air by the impact of the meteorite must be found. It is estimated that the sulfur formed may have been ejected or evaporated. This supports the prevailing theory of the extinction of the dinosaurs. The common theory about the extinction of the dinosaurs; It is stated that the survival of plant and animal life becomes difficult and disappears due to the cooling of the climate. Dense sulfur mixed with water and rising into the sky is thought to cause climate cooling.

According to Professor Gulick, “The ingress of 100 gigatons (billion tons) of sulfur into the atmosphere causes a 25 degree Celsius drop in air temperature, and this continues for at least 15 years. This means that in many parts of the world the temperature drops below freezing.” Gulick says that after the meteorite impact, 325 gigatons of sulfur were emitted into the atmosphere. Climate change, which lasted for many years and reached extreme dimensions, caused mass extinctions and brought the end of dinosaurs. Only some hibernating mammals survived this period. The surviving mammals replaced the giant reptiles after the meteorite impact. When these primitive mammals came out of their dens, they saw that the giant reptiles were gone and began to grow and develop.

Share

Scientists; By examining the geological evidence, he stated that millions of years ago, an asteroid with a diameter of 10 km hit the earth at the deadliest angle.
