The Nazca Lines, giant geometric shapes made hundreds of years ago, are among the most famous structures of the region. How these lines are made has been the subject of research by experts for many years. The spiral-shaped pits in the region are among the other structures that attract attention and are investigated. These magnificent structures indicate that a developed civilization lived in the region in ancient times. The purpose of making huge pits opened in the form of a spiral was solved thanks to the photographs taken from space.

About 2500 years ago, ancient societies lived in Peru’s arid region of less than 4 millimeters of precipitation per year. How these societies survived despite the drought has been the subject of research for many years. Research in the region has revealed that they have an agriculture-based economy consisting of crops such as corn and squash. During the examination of the structures found, complex underground aqueducts were reached. At the same time, there are holes on the summits of the mountains and underground irrigation wells in the form of spirals in the plains. These giant spiral wells are an advanced hydraulic system to extract groundwater.

Purpose of Spiral Wells

In the spiral funnel-shaped wells, the method of date determination by means of carbon could not be used and the secrets of the channels could not be solved for a long time. Since many civilizations in South America did not use writing, there is no information about the structures found in the settlements in Nazca. The formation of aqueducts has been seen as a mysterious structure for many years. But Rosa Lasaponara of the Environmental Analysis Methodology Institute in Italy has revealed that these structures are an advanced hydraulic system built to extract groundwater.

Lasaponara and his team conducted satellite photographs of the spiral structures and surveys of nearby old settlements. Lasaponara said, “These structures were much more advanced than what we see today. The complex underground aqueducts in the region were used as a vital force keeping their societies alive.

Amazing Features of Water Systems

In the high parts of the mountain, there are holes that continue for a belt and transfer the collected precipitation into the mountain through channels. The waters flow down from approximately 6,900 pits opened in the mountain and descend to the plain through channels opened under the ground. Since the channels are underground, they prevent the evaporation and loss of water. Thanks to the spiral funnel-shaped chimneys built on the channels, the wind enters the channel and thus the flow of water is provided. In addition to being used for agricultural purposes, the waters were also used to meet the daily needs of people.

The funnels, which have a wider mouth compared to a conventional water well system, can accumulate more water when it rains. The multi-storey spiral structures were built in such a way as to make the descents and ascents to the water level by walking. This system, which makes agriculture possible in the seasons that do not receive precipitation; It is known as the oldest and most advanced underground water transport system made by man to provide life in a desert environment without water. The system is lowered to the bottom from the vertical wells drilled on the top of the mountain and is lowered to the village with the horizontally continuing water channel and access to the water is provided by the spiral well.

Traces of Advanced Civilization in Nazca Structures

The structures found in Nazca also provide information about the people living in the region. The fact that these structures, which constitute a complex system, were found in the years before Christ, shows that the people living in that period were a developed society. The construction of such structures requires a special technology and a good organization. Since the region is built on tectonic fault lines, it is thought that they have information about the geological structure of the region and the periodic changes of water.

Lasaponara, who gives information about the buildings; He stated that the construction of funnels and canals, as in the Nazca Lines, required a good and social organization. The Nazca Lines are thought to be linked to water systems. Some of these funnels, which were built of very high quality, can still be used today.

It is thought that the society has a hierarchical structure and they work in a highly organized manner. Lasaponara stated that spiral funnels have an important function in “controlling the distribution of water among the communities under their influence by those in power”. The fact that water was transported to one of the driest regions of the world and that they built canals to collect water under the mountain without machinery requires highly advanced knowledge and skills.

Share

Located in Peru, the Nazca Desert is one of the driest places in the world.
