This lake, which is the highest lake in the world, attracts attention with its life and mysteries. Considered sacred by the Incas, Lake Titicaca is accepted as the starting point of life. The lake was taken under protection as “Titicaca National Reserve” in 1978. The floating islands on the lake, where the local people live, are among the most striking features of the lake.

Although it is not known exactly where the name Titikaka comes from, Titi means “big cat” and Kak means “rock” in Aymara language. The general meaning of the name is translated as “Puma Rock”. Puma, one of the felines, is an animal considered sacred by the Incas. According to the Inca legend told; God Viracocha came out of this lake and created the moon, the sun, the stars and the first humans. Manco Capac, the first Inca king, was born here, and Puno City was founded on the king’s birthplace. According to the Inca belief, this lake will be the place where the souls return after death.

Characteristics and Legends of Lake Titicaca

Located on the plateau of the Andes called Altiplano, the lake is a high altitude lake on which commercial ships also operate. The lake, whose west coast belongs to Peru and east coast belongs to Bolivia, has an area of 8,288 square kilometers. The height of the lake above sea level is 3,810 meters, its length is 194 kilometers and its width is 65 kilometers. Although some areas of the lake are considered bottomless by locals, the deepest measured is 280 meters. In general, its average depth varies between 140 – 180 meters.

The lake is fed by more than 25 streams. There are many small and large islets on the lake, “Sun Island” bearing the traces of the Inca culture. The reeds of around 37 thousand hectares in the lake are considered among the important natural heritages. There are many native fish and bird species under protection in the lake. At the same time, fishing made by the people living around the lake is an important source of income.

On the shores of the lake, Peru’s oldest civilizations Incas, It is possible to see the traces of civilizations such as Purakas and Tiwanakus. In particular, the written information and Inca legends found in the ruins of the Incas are quite remarkable. In the southern part of the lake, on Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) in Bolivia, there are more than 80 temples and Inca structures built for various rituals. According to the creation myth of the Incas, Isla del Sol is the home of the Sun God Inti. The human race started in this lake and the souls of those who died will return here. According to belief, the god Inti created people out of stone and gave them life.

Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca

One of the most characteristic features of the lake is the floating islets in the lake. The people living in these islets are the Uros people. Although life is difficult due to the cold climate, the Uros tribes have been living in this lake for thousands of years. The Uros tribes built floating huts by gathering the pikes of the Totora plant, a local plant, in order to protect themselves from the warrior Incas. The tribes continue to preserve their unique lifestyles since pre-Inca civilization. These houses, which were originally built as a defensive tactic, have become the way of life of the tribe. The tribe, who thinks they are the owners of the lake, consider themselves as the son of the sun.

The tribe continued their lives by moving away from any threat due to the movement of the islands. However, the reason why they continue to live in these difficult conditions today is tourism. Tourists visiting the area are allowed to visit the floating islands. The young people of the people, who continue their traditional life, mostly leave these houses and lead a different life on the mainland.

Share

Lake Titicaca, the largest freshwater lake in South America, is located between Peru and Bolivia.
