Ahi Evran, the founder of the Ahilik tradesmen organization in Anatolia, is a scholar of kalam, tafsir, mysticism, and fiqh, as well as a physician. It was called “Evran” because the Evran snake, a very large snake seen in Anatolia, calmed down and obeyed when it saw it. It is told that Ahi Evran, who advanced in the field of medicine, went to the mountains and caught snakes and produced an antidote from the venom of snakes. According to some sources, it is said that he was called by this name because he kept snakes in the tanning workshop that Ahi Evran founded in Kayseri.

The real name of Ahi Evran is Sheikh Nasiruddin Mahmud Ahi Evran bin Abbas. The word Ahi means brother in Arabic. Evran, which everyone feared and ran away from, was nicknamed “Ahi Evran”, that is, “brother of the snake”, because the snake obeyed him. Due to the services rendered to Islam by Ahi Evran, “Nasiruddin”, which means helping the religion, was added to his nickname. In fact, some researchers state that Nasreddin Hodja was Ahi Evran because of the similar characteristics seen in similar periods.

Life of Ahi Evran

Ahi Evran was born in 1171 in the town of Hoy, Iran. The town of Hoy has been a Turkmen settlement since the time of the Great Seljuk ruler Tugrul Bey. Ahi Evran’s childhood and education period was spent in Azerbaijan. Later, he came to the Khorasan and Transoxiana regions of Iran and took lessons from the great masters. Ahi Evran took courses in various branches of science from Imam-i Fahruddin Razi. He progressed on the path of Sufism by participating in the conversations and lectures of Hodja Ahmed Yesevi’s students.

He met Evhadddin Hamid Kirmani during his pilgrimage, became one of his students and stayed with him until his death. He came to Anatolia with Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi and his teacher Evhaduddin upon the invitation of Mecdüddin İshak, the father of Sadreddin-i Konevi, one of the administrators of the Anatolian Seljuk State in Konya. Later, he married his teacher’s daughter Fatima Bacı.

He presented his works Mürşid-ül-Kifaye and Yezdan-Şinaht to Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad. He traveled around Anatolian cities with his teacher, Evhaduddin, and gave sermons to shopkeepers about Islamic shopping information. He organized the tradesmen under one roof in the places he went, thus becoming the founder of the first Ahi organization in Anatolian cities. Ahi Evran, who settled in Kayseri after the death of his teacher, was accepted as the sheikh of all Anatolian Akhis. It settled in Kırşehir after Denizli, Konya and Kayseri respectively in Anatolia. The tomb of Ahi Evran, who was killed as a result of the Mongol attacks, is in Kırşehir.

Ahilik Organization and the Origin of the Idiom Throwing Shoe Checkers

Ahi Organization; It is a tradesman solidarity organization founded by Ahi Evran with the advice of Hacı Bektaş Veli. It enabled the Muslim people living in Anatolia during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods to be educated in various professions such as art, trade and economy. This organization, which is similar to today’s chambers of tradesmen, has its own rules. The organization, whose main profession is “dabbak”, is a socio-economic order in which good morals, honesty, brotherhood and benevolence are combined. In the tradition of the Ahi order, the shop of the shopkeeper who did fraudulent work was either closed or the shopkeeper was punished.

One of the most controversial topics was shoes. When there was any manufacturing fraud in shoes, the shoes made by the tradesmen were thrown on the roof in order to punish them. Throwing a shoe made by a tradesman is one of the biggest losses for that tradesman and leads to a decrease in his customers. When talking about such a tradesman, the phrase “his shoe was thrown to the roof” was used. That would mean that the tradesman was not good in that profession. Today; This is where the phrase “the shoe was thrown at the checker”, which means falling out of favor with the emergence of someone superior to him, comes from here.

Ahi Evran’s wife, Fatma Bacı, established the “Bacıyan-ı Rum” organization, the world’s first women’s organization, for the organization and development of women. This organization; He gave trainings for Anatolian women to be with their husbands in defense of the homeland against enemies when necessary. At the same time, it was established to ensure the development and development of art, literature, social and economic fields.

Share

Ahi Evran; He is one of the great parents who lived in Anatolia.
