The Great Offensive, one of the greatest heroic epics the world has ever seen, ended in victory in Dumlupınar on 30 August 1922. August 30, the date of the victory of the Turkish army under the command of the great leader Mustafa Kemal, is celebrated as an official and national holiday in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus every year.

The Great Offensive, of which Mustafa Kemal was the commander-in-chief, is also known as the Battle of the Commander-in-Chief. After the attack, the Greek armies that occupied the country were followed up to İzmir, and with the liberation of İzmir on September 9, 1922, the Turkish lands were freed from the Greek occupation.

Although the occupiers moved away from the country’s borders after 30 August, August 30 represents the day when the country’s lands were taken back. The Entente fleet occupied Istanbul, the French Adana, the British Urfa, Maraş, Samsun and Merzifon, the Italians Antalya and southwestern Anatolia. With the permission of the Allied Powers, the Greek army landed in Izmir on May 15, 1919.

The Turkish Nation started the Kuvayi Milliye operation with the awareness of being a nation against the occupations of the Allied Powers. A multi-front political and military struggle was fought between 1919 and 1922 in order to preserve the integrity of the country within the borders of the National Pact.

During the War of Independence, the Turkish army planned the Great Offensive, a covert operation, in order to deliver the final and decisive blow to the invading forces. On 20 July 1922, Mustafa Kemal was given the authority of commander-in-chief for the fourth time by the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Mustafa Kemal, who decided to attack in June, carried out the preparations in secret.

What Happened in the Great Offensive

The Great Offensive started in Afyon on the night of the 26th of August to the 27th.
