Aogashima Island is an island formed as a result of a volcanic eruption. It has volcanoes that are still active. For this reason, living on this island requires a lot of courage. It is located in the Philippine Sea. The island, which is connected to Japan, is considered one of the most interesting places in the world due to its structure.
With the formation of a second depression inside a volcanic depression, it creates an extremely effective image. This depression, called the caldera, forms the island itself. The second depression formed gives the island the appearance of a mysterious country.
It is not known how the settlement on the island first started. Many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have occurred in the history of the island. As a result, many houses were evacuated and the population drastically decreased. Approximately 200 people live on the island. The majority of the living people are Japanese.
Livelihoods of the Island People
There is still an active volcano on the island. Living in a giant volcanic crater, these people are quite accustomed to this situation. There is only 1 school and 1 post office on the island. In terms of appearance, it is home to quite magnificent views.
Part of the Izu Archipelago, the island is located 200 miles south of the Philippine Sea. The island, which is part of Japan, is administered by Tokyo. The active volcano on the island last erupted in 1785. About 140 people living on the island died during this eruption. The people of the island produce their own fruits and vegetables. Their only livelihood is fishing. The average life span of the people on the island is about 100 years. There are very sharp and hard cliffs around the island.
After the island’s reputation began to spread, it became a place of great interest to tourists. For this reason, there are very few restaurants, 1 bar, 6 hotels and many camping areas. Access to the island is not possible directly. It is possible to go to the island by ship or helicopter from Hachijojima, which is 70 kilometers away. There are geothermal water and saunas in the central part of the island.
In addition, due to the underwater richness of the seas around the island, scuba diving is extremely popular. The island has a surreal beauty. It is difficult to believe that such beauties exist that have not been harmed or touched by humans. The island, which is 432 meters above sea level, provides a magnificent panoramic view.
