During the La Nina process, a warmer-than-normal winter in the South and a colder-than-normal winter in the North also led to a severe hurricane season. However, La Nina, which is effective for more than five months, gradually loses its effect.

Statements by the WMO Secretary General

WMO Secretary General Prof. Petteri Taalas, in his statement, stated that El Nino, which will replace La Nina, will cause opposite effects on weather and climate models in many parts of the world. It is predicted that El Nino will trigger higher global temperatures and these temperatures will be extremely effective and reach record levels.

What is El Nino? How is it formed?

El Nino is the general name for large oscillations and related atmospheric events in the eastern Pacific surface waters. El Nino, which means “boy” or “brat” and “little girl” in Spanish, is characterized as the rebellious child of the weather. The effect of El Nino usually starts from the west coast of South America. El Nino was first described by Sir Gilbert Thomas Walker in 1923. The signature of El Nino can be seen as monthly or seasonal air pressure changes.

The El Niño weather phenomenon occurs when the direction of water flow changes, usually due to weakening and changing direction of the winds. This can cause atmospheric events and pressure changes, leading to weather events such as major typhoons, floods and droughts.

Sea water temperatures increase with the effect of El Nino, and this may cause air temperatures to rise in autumn and winter. El Nino usually lasts for 8 to 10 months, with a period ranging from 2 to 7 years.
