In the dark depths of the vast seas, there are cities and temples of unimaginable size. Most of them were submerged by natural disasters. Some of them are not even known by whom. The city of Port Royal is one of them.
Port Royal was not a city when it was first established. It is a small outpost built to protect Kingston Harbor on the British island of Jamaica in the Caribbean. But with the start of the Anglo-Spanish War of 1585-1604, Port Royal was transformed.
The British government sought help from the famous pirates of the Caribbean in order to protect Port Royal Island. In the treaty, England will receive a quarter of the pirates’ plunder, and in return, it will give the Port Royal outpost to the pirates. Port Royal, which is at the center of the Spanish trade routes, has been preferred by the pirates. Spain has to pass through Port Royal Island on its journey to important airports. Therefore, it has become the fastest developing pirate city in the world.
How Was the City of Port Royal Submerged?
Port Royal, once the center of the world’s largest crime network, was a place where only pirates lived in the 1600s. Port Royal is so dangerous that no one can interfere. Pirates from all over the world bring their looted goods and sell them to the merchants here. They also put these products on the market. In fact, the term pirated goods has emerged because of the name given to the products coming from this island.
Criminals, fugitives, murderers sentenced to death have accepted Port Royal as their home. The pirates have built such a rich life here that they almost swam in gold. They lived a life according to their own rules.
There was a great earthquake in 1692. In this earthquake, almost the entire pirate city was buried in the sea. In the city, which is submerged in water, houses and roads stand hundreds of meters deep as if they had never been destroyed. The pirates who managed to escape are scattered all over the world. Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, American coasts have become their new home. But none of them could forget this vanished island.
Considering the findings unearthed from the historical records and excavations related to the City of Port Royal, it has been determined that there are many bars and taverns. There is a bar or tavern every 10 meters on the peninsula with a population of 8 thousand. Therefore, it is known that there is a lot of prostitution and drinking places in this city. The city is called the city of sin. There are beliefs that this city, which disappeared with a single earthquake, was punished by God for the sins they committed.
