Internal Structure of Shell Grotto
Shell GrottoIt consists of a curved underground passage approximately 2.4 meters high and 21 meters long. This passage ends in a rectangular room called the “Altar Room”. The dimensions of the room are approximately 5 x 6 meters.
The structure, which is completely closed underground, is reached by stairs going down from the upper section. Starting from the entrance, a curved passage carved from chalk ends with a decorative arch. Following this arch is a central circular column called the Rotunda. On the side of the Rotunda is the Dome, covered with an opening that allows daylight to enter. The base of the dome is designed in a triangular shape and there are arched passages on three sides.
One of these passages leads to the Serpentine Passage. The walls and ceilings of this winding corridor are covered with mosaics decorated with rich and varied patterns. At the end of the Serpentine Passage, another arch reaches the area called the Rectangular Chamber. Here the decoration has a more geometric and formal character. Star and sun motifs constitute the main themes of this area. The focal point in the room is the “altar” framed by a gothic arch.
