Vaka-i Vakvakiye is a bad event that happened in history, also known as the Sycamore Case. In the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century, IV. It happened during the reign of Mehmet. It is a military uprising in Istanbul.
It is an execution event carried out in 1656 under the leadership of Hasan Ağa, Şamlı Mehmet Ağa and Galata Voivode Karakuş Mehmet Ağa. The Janissaries, who could not receive their salaries, organized and rebelled by these people.
Sultan IV, who was still young. Mehmet tried to make a deal with the Janissaries at the end of the uprising against him. The Janissaries wrote the names of about 30 state officials they wanted to be executed on a list and presented them to the sultan. Although the sultan asked for the forgiveness of these people, he could not resist. Upon the incident, the people whose names were on the list were killed and their bodies were hung on a plane tree in the Horse Square.
Where Does the Name Vaka-i Vakvakiye Come From?
The people killed as a result of the uprising were thrown from the walls of Topkapı Palace. Later, these people hung the branches of a plane tree in Sultanahmet. For this reason, the event is also called the Cinar Incident. At the same time, the tree on which the corpses are hung has been named as the case-i Vakvakiye because of its likeness to the Waqvak tree in Indian mythology and whose fruits resemble a human head.
At the time of the uprising in which this event took place, the great Valide Kösem Sultan and many hearth lords were killed. The king was dismissed. The power passed into the hands of the boys and a certain group that cooperated with them. These people made unnecessary expenditures from the treasury by interfering in state affairs. By abusing their office, they considered themselves superior to official officials. State officials who lost their lives in this incident went down in history as martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the state.
