Pilot Captain Cengiz Topel, Turkey’s first air war martyr, was subjected to brutal torture in the Greek Cypriot side, where he was captured. While he was alive, his eyes were gouged out, his biceps were pierced with a drill, and his private parts were crushed. Concrete nails were driven into his skull, his left leg was broken, and his throat was slit up to his navel, and his internal organs were removed.
Cengiz Topel, who was subjected to unprecedented tortures in history, said in a report published by the Greeks that Cengiz Topel died in the hospital. As a result of the insistent demands of the Turkish authorities, his body was taken by the Greeks and brought to his hometown. As a result of the examinations, the tortures that Cengiz Topel was subjected to were revealed.
Esref Dusenkalkar, the founder of the Turkish resistance organization, who saw Cengiz Topel’s body and took his last photo, said the following in the face of the scene he saw.
“The day I saw our holy martyr in front of the representatives of the United Nations soldiers was the most painful day of my life. I took one last look at our Topel, who built a bridge between the Motherland and the Childland with its steel wings. I saw that; bitch Greeks destroyed his left eye, carved his biceps with a drill, drove a concrete nail into the left side of his skull, broke his left leg, and as if that wasn’t enough, they slit his chest from his throat to his navel and sewed them up like a sack. (according to the statement of one of our doctors, they stole his internal organs, heart and lungs) for a while I thought about what was done to our ideal body Cengiz Topel, who clenched his fists, clenched his teeth, and at that moment I believed that the Greeks stole the smile that God had given me and I swore: the Greek word is in the dictionaries As long as it lasts, this hatred cannot go away from me.”
The place where Cengiz Topel was martyred is currently used as a museum in the Yeşilyurt Cengiz Topel barracks. Until the renovation of the room in which he was tortured, traces of torture were clearly observed.
