What are Starlink Satellites? Conspiracy Theories About

The occasional Starlink satellite appearing in the sky has become an intriguing subject. Starlink satellites is a satellite constellation project developed under the leadership of Elon Musk. These satellites aim to carry uninterrupted internet access all over the world.

The deployment and wide scope of satellites in different orbits raises excitement about the future of the internet from astronomy. But this major initiative also raises some concerns because of its potential impact on space junk and astronomy. Here is more information on what Starlink satellites are, how they work and their potential impact.

Starlink satellites are a constellation of satellites developed by the American space company SpaceX. Their main purpose is to expand and improve internet access worldwide. This constellation of satellites consists of hundreds or even thousands of small satellites and ground stations. These components come together and provide high-speed internet service to the users.

SpaceX also plans to use some of these satellites for scientific research and exploration. However, some of its satellites are also considered to be used for military purposes.

As of 2020, SpaceX has placed a total of 775 Starlink satellites into orbit. In addition, it is planned to send more than 60 satellites into space each time, with launch operations held every two weeks in the future. In the future, it is aimed to put 12.000 satellites into orbit and then to serve a total of 42.000 satellites. This is a major initiative aimed at creating a comprehensive internet network around the world.

The first 12,000 satellites are planned to take place in different orbits. In the first orbit, there will be an orbit at an altitude of about 550 km and containing a total of 1,600 satellites. The second orbit will be at an altitude of about 1,550 km and will have about 2,800 Ku- and Ka-band spectrum satellites in this orbit. The third orbit will be at an altitude of 340 km and approximately 7,500 V-band satellites will be located in this orbit.

However, the project of placing these large-scale satellites into orbit has brought with it possible implications for astronomy and long-term space junk concerns.

Designing Starlink Satellites

It is anticipated that it will take ten years to design, manufacture and deploy the satellite constellation into orbit. The total cost of the project was expected to be $10 billion to SpaceX as of May 2018. The development of the product started in 2015 and the first prototype satellite test flights were carried out in February 2018.

The second set of test satellites and the first large-scale deployment operation were designed to include 60 small satellites, and this flight took place on 24 May 2019. Starlink research, development, production and orbital control operations are conducted entirely at SpaceX satellite development facilities in Redmond, Washington.

Conspiracy Theories About Starlink Satellites

Starlink satellites have been the subject of various conspiracy theories, as they are a new field brought by technological developments. Here are some common Starlink conspiracy theories:

Surveillance and Control Theory: According to this theory, Starlink satellites are actually used to spy on people and control communications around the world. This theory was put forward due to the density of satellites and the breadth of their coverage.

Population Reduction Theory: Some conspiracy theorists claim that the Starlink project is actually a tool to reduce the world’s population. In this theory, it is claimed that satellites emit electromagnetic radiation and harm human health.

Space Trash and Astronomy Barrier Theory: This theory suggests that the hundreds or even thousands of Starlink satellites will cause space junk and adversely affect astronomy studies. The brightness of the satellites can also pollute the night sky.

Weather Control Theory: Some conspiracy theorists claim that Starlink satellites are used to control weather and climate.

Exploration Theory of Underground Mines: It is claimed that satellites are used to study the surface and to find hidden underground mines.
