Recently, claims about a planet dubbed “Planet X” or “Nibiru” have become a major focus of attention among researchers and scientists. On social media, expressions like “Nibiru is coming!” have begun to create a sense of anxiety and confusion. Those supporting this claim present apocalyptic scenarios through some videos, while others make various claims such as “Nibiru will cleanse Earth in 2025.”
While some make serious claims about Nibiru, describing it as “true saviors descending to Earth for the salvation of humanity ,” others, using anonymous identities on social media, are sharing posts about Nibiru in a style reminiscent of military operations. Some even attempt to support their claims with dated documents to make it seem as if it happened in the past.
All these claims are frequently rejected by the scientific community and constantly refuted by NASA’s statements. So, does Nibiru really exist? Or is it just a myth? In this article, we will explore the mystery of Nibiru and the facts behind the claims that threaten Earth.
What is Nibiru or Planet X?
It is believed that there is a transiting planet,called Nibiru by the Sumerians and Marduk by Babylonian astronomers. It has been suggested that this planet will make a close pass by Earth after December 2012, the date when the Mayan calendar ends . These claims have been the subject of research by Zecharia Sitchin .
According to Sitchin, Nibiru is four times larger than Earth , completes its orbit around the sun in a period of 3600 years , and has an elliptical orbit. Sitchin’s work has suggested that ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia were also aware of this planet. The Sumerians referred to this planet as belonging to their gods, ” those who came from the sky (Anunnaki) .”
What is the Nibiru Disaster?
The Nibiru catastrophe is a supposed catastrophic encounter between Earth and a large planetary object that some groups believe will occur in the early 21st century. Those who believe this claim often refer to this object as Nibiru or Planet X. This idea was first put forward in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, the founder of the ZetaTalk website . Lieder claims to have received messages from extraterrestrial beings outside the Zeta Reticuli star system.
Lieder notes that this object was chosen in May 2003 to warn humanity that it would pass through the inner solar system, causing a physical polar shift that would wipe out most of humankind. However, that date was later postponed.
This prediction later spread beyond Lieder’s website and was adopted by many internet doomsday groups. In the late 2000s, it began to be closely associated with the 2012 phenomenon. In recent years, the Nibiru catastrophe has frequently reappeared in popular media and is often linked to astronomical events.
Although the name “Nibiru” is derived from the works of “ancient astronaut” author Zecharia Sitchin and his interpretations of Babylonian and Sumerian mythology, Sitchin himself denied any connection between his work and any claims of an impending apocalypse.
However, there is no scientific evidence that such a catastrophe will occur. Astronomers and planetary scientists have dismissed this claim as pseudoscience and an internet hoax. Astronomers have suggested that there are many planets beyond Neptune, and while most have been disproven, some remain among the viable candidates. However, all of the current candidates are in orbits that, even when closest to the Sun, keep them well beyond Neptune.
The Emergence of the Idea of the Nibiru Encounter
The idea of a Nibiru encounter began with the claims of Nancy Lieder, a woman from Wisconsin . Lieder, who claimed to have made contact with gray aliens called Zetans as a child and that they implanted a communication device in her brain, created a website called ZetaTalk in 1995 to spread her ideas.
Lieder first drew attention to the Hale-Bopp comet in 1997 during its perihelion, appearing in internet news groups. Claiming to speak as Zetans, he said: “The Hale-Bopp comet does not exist. This is a hoax perpetrated by those who want to keep the masses immobile until it’s too late. Hale-Bopp is nothing more than a distant star and will not approach.”
He claimed that the Hale-Bopp story was fabricated to suggest that a large planetary object was approaching that would destroy civilization. Although Lieder removed the first two sentences of his initial statement from his website after it was revealed that Hale-Bopp’s perihelion was a bright, long-observed comet, these sentences can still be found in Google archives. His claims eventually made it to the New York Times .
Lieder stated that Planet X is roughly four times the size of Earth and that its closest approach will occur on May 27, 2003, resulting in Earth’s rotation stopping for exactly 5.9 Earth days. He explained that this would cause a pole reversal, destabilizing Earth’s pole due to the magnetic attraction between Earth’s core and the passing planet’s magnetism.
He suggested that this would disrupt Earth’s magnetic core, subsequently causing a shift in Earth’s crust. However, after 2003 passed without incident, Lieder claimed it was merely “a white lie to deceive the establishment.” He refused to reveal the true date, arguing that it would give those in power enough time to declare martial law and trap people in cities during the shift, leading to their deaths.
Although Lieder initially referred to this object as “Planet X,” it has been closely linked to Nibiru, a planet from the works of veteran astronaut advocate Zecharia Sitchin, particularly his book * The 12th Planet* .
According to Sitchin’s interpretation of ancient Mesopotamian religious texts, which has been shown to be based on a misunderstanding of those texts, a giant planet (named Nibiru or Marduk) passes by Earth every 3,600 years, allowing its inhabitants to interact with humanity.
Sitchin identified these beings with the Anunnaki from Sumerian mythology and claimed they were humanity’s first gods. Lieder first established the connection between Nibiru and Planet X on his website in 1996 (“Planet X exists and Planet 12, one and the same”).
Sitchin, who died in 2010, denied any connection between his work and Lieder’s claims. Partly in response to Lieder’s statements, Sitchin published a book in 2007 titled “The End of Days,” which determined the time of Nibiru’s last pass by Earth; this would mean it would return around AD 2900, given the object’s supposed 3,600-year orbit. Sitchin stated that he believed the Annunaki could return earlier with their spacecraft, and that the timing of the return would coincide with the transition from the astrological Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius.
Modern proponents of the Nibiru catastrophe theory often point out that the winged sun symbol actually represents Nibiru, which they believe would appear as a “winged star.”
Science’s Explanation of Nibiru or Planet X
Astronomers reject the idea of Nibiru and are working to inform the public that it poses no threat to Earth . They point out that such a close object would be easily visible to the naked eye and could have noticeable effects on the orbits of exoplanets. They also note that many of the photos claiming to show “Nibiru” near the Sun are actually lens flares, which are false images of the Sun caused by reflections within the lens.
Astronomers emphasize that an orbit similar to Nibiru’s (within the planetary zone of the Solar System) is inconsistent with celestial mechanics. NASA space scientist David Morrison explains that, contrary to what proponents claim, after an earlier flyby of Earth in Sumerian times, Earth would no longer be in its current near-circular orbit and would likely have lost its moon.
If Nibiru were a brown dwarf, the effects would be even worse, since brown dwarfs are much larger. Because Pluto is now frequently observed with backyard telescopes, any giant planet beyond Pluto could easily be observed by an amateur astronomer. If such an object existed within the Solar System, it would have passed through the inner Solar System millions of times by now.
Astronomer Mike Brown points out that if this object’s orbit were as described, it would only remain in the Solar System for a million years before Jupiter ejected it, and even if such a planet existed, its magnetic field would have no effect on Earth’s orbit. Lieder’s claims that approaching Nibiru would cause Earth’s rotation to stop or its axis to shift violate the laws of physics.
When Carl Sagan refuted Immanuel Velikovsky’s book *Collision of the Worlds* , which put forward the claim that the Earth’s rotation could be stopped and then restarted , he stated, “The energy required to brake the Earth is not enough to melt it, but it would cause a noticeable increase in temperature: the oceans would rise to the boiling point of water. How would the Earth start rotating again at the same speed? The Earth cannot do that on its own. Because of the law of conservation of angular momentum.”
In a 2009 interview with Discovery Channel, Mike Brown stated that while it’s not impossible for the Sun to have a distant planetary companion, such an object would have to be so far from the observed regions of the Solar System that it wouldn’t be detectable.
The gravitational influence on other planets. A Mars-sized object could remain undetected at 300 AU (10 times the distance to Neptune); a Jupiter-sized object at 30,000 AU. To travel 1000 AU in two years, an object would need to move at a speed of 2400 km/s; this is faster than the galactic escape velocity. At this speed, any object would be flung out of the Solar System and then out of the Milky Way galaxy into intergalactic space.
Claims made by conspiracy theorists
Many who believe in the close approach of Planet X/Nibiru accuse NASA of deliberately concealing visual evidence of its existence . Some surveys have suggested that many people perceive NASA as a large government agency funded as much as the Department of Defense. One such accusation relates to the IRAS infrared space observatory, launched in 1983.
The satellite briefly made headlines due to an “unknown object” initially described as “possibly as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly as close to Earth .” This newspaper article was presented by proponents of the Nibiru cataclysm, beginning with Lieder, as proof of Nibiru’s existence. However, further analysis revealed that nine of the initially unidentified objects were distant galaxies and the tenth was a “galactic cirrus”; none were found to be Solar System objects.
Another claim made by conspiracy theorists is that the US government built the South Pole Telescope (SPT) to track Nibiru’s orbit and optically image the object. However, the SPT (not funded by NASA) is a radio telescope and cannot take optical images. The South Pole location was chosen because of the low humidity environment, and it is not possible for an approaching object to be seen only from the South Pole.
Another conspiracy theory concerns a missing data patch on Google Sky near the Orion constellation, often presented as evidence of Nibiru’s manipulation. However, the same region of the sky is still viewable by thousands of amateur astronomers. A scientist at Google stated that the missing data resulted from a software error during the image compilation process.
Another alleged piece of evidence from Google Sky is the carbon star CW Leonis, the brightest object in the 10-micron infrared sky, which was mistakenly claimed to be Nibiru. Those who believe in Planet X/Nibiru have given it many names since it was first proposed. In reality, all of these are names of other real, hypothetical, or imaginary objects in the Solar System that bear little resemblance to the planet described by Lieder or the Nibiru described by Sitchin.
