Zurbahan Mountain, rising near the Hekimhan district of Malatya, has left a deep mark on the minds of the local people not only with its natural beauty but also with the legends and mysteries it harbors. Considered sacred for centuries, this mountain, according to legends, offers much more than an ordinary mountain, with its enchanted chambers filled with gold and jewels, its springs whose water is considered sacred, and its stories that have inspired fear and admiration throughout history. The legends that roam the slopes of Zurbahan Mountain carry the traces of the past to the present, continuing to nourish both the cultural heritage of the region and the imagination of its people.
Geographical and Historical Riches of Zurbahan Mountain
Zurbahan Mountain is a 2091-meter-high mountain located 4 km north of Hekimhan district in Malatya province, connected to the Ayranca Mountains. On the southern slope facing Hekimhan, there are four caves located in the central arch. One of these caves is said to be quite deep, reaching all the way to the base of the mountain.
At the foot of the mountain lies an ancient ruin belonging to a past civilization . Throughout history, it is evident from the ruined mud-brick walls at the cave entrances and the scattered pottery fragments that the people living here used these caves for hiding during times of war.
The high-quality water flowing from the upper slopes of the mountain is used to irrigate apricot and walnut orchards in the lower regions, and also provides drinking water to the Hekimhan district center.
The back slopes of the mountain contain rich deposits of dolomite, thorium, and iron (in the form of siderite), and these iron deposits have been partially exploited for centuries. On the steep slopes of the mountain’s front face, deer, previously thought to be extinct, have reappeared, and this area has been placed under protection by the Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks , with hunting strictly prohibited.
The Sacredness of Mount Zurbahan
According to the late teacher Metin Kara, in the middle arch of the mountain, towards Karadağ, there is a freshwater trough about 1-1.5 meters in diameter that does not drain its water but refills when emptied. Because of this feature, the local people believed that this water was connected to the Zamzam water in the Kaaba and named it “Zamzam water .” For this reason, the mountain is considered sacred by the people.
Legends Related to Mount Zurbahan
A local religious scholar decides one day to open the doors of these chambers. He climbs to the top of the mountain, draws a circle, enters it, and begins to recite prayers. As he recites his prayers, terrifying creatures begin to appear around him, trying to startle him and break the spell. However, the scholar remains unfazed and completes his prayers. When the door opens, he sees a beautiful girl sitting on a pile of gold. Carefully avoiding looking at the girl, the scholar begins to fill his pockets with gold. But when he tries to leave, the door won’t open. No matter what he tries, he fails. Finally, in desperation, he puts the gold back down, and the door opens, and the scholar emerges empty-handed.
Another Account of the Legend of Zurbahan
Located 6-7 km southwest of Zurbahan, a steep rock formation called “Asarkaya” is central to these legends. A stepped and steep tunnel descends from the top of the rock, leading to a narrow, rounded gorge. Today, the mouth of the gorge is blocked by stones. The gorge opens onto Mal Tepesi on one side, Ballıkaya on another, and Zurbahan on yet another.
Legend says that golden tools are hidden on Mal Hill, honey-filled chests on Ballıkaya, and unique jewels in Zurbahan. However, those who wish to reach the jewels in Zurbahan are forced to turn back after their lanterns go out when they travel 1-2 kilometers down the tunnel. It is believed that this tunnel is enchanted and no one can reach the treasures in Zurbahan.
The Mysterious Asarkaya Cave on Mount Zurbahan
Asarkaya Cave, located on Mount Zurbahan, is an impressive structure carved into a giant rock. Reaching the cave entrance is a narrow staircase of 180 steps descending at a 70-80 degree angle. These steps are hand-carved and only wide enough for one foot to fit through. After ascending the stairs, an oval-shaped gorge emerges between the rocks. Today, this gorge is sealed off with stones.
Although the exact construction date of Asarkaya Cave is unknown, its structural features suggest it was used for defense and protection. Steep stairs and narrow passages support the idea that the cave was designed for security purposes. The absence of any permanent soot or smoke marks inside indicates that there was no long-term habitation. Travelers have found brick-like fragments inside the cave. The function of these fragments is currently unknown.
Today, explorers who venture into the cave with cameras and various equipment report finding no gold or other valuables inside. However, these explorers report encountering a mysterious silhouette while taking photographs. Unfortunately, there is no definitive information about the nature or explanation of this silhouette. This enigmatic figure encountered in the depths of the cave further enhances the secrets and mysteries surrounding Asarkaya Cave, bringing with it an unsolved puzzle.
