Poveglia Island, with its terrible past, is located in the Venetian Lagoon in Northern Italy. Occupying a small area, the island is known as the “Island of Death” due to its frightening past. There are mass graves of people on the island, which is famous for its ghost legends. Since there is no permission to enter the island of death, where 160 thousand people died, it stands in desolation today. Tourists who are curious and want to see the island can visit it with special permission.

In the 1700s, when the plague disease was intense in Europe, those who came to the island were infected with the plague and all people lost their lives. As a result of the seriousness of the incurable disease, the island was quarantined and the people infected with the disease were sent to this island. People suspected of being ill in any way were left to die on the island.

The treatment of patients sent to the island is quite frightening. Many people who contracted the disease were cremated en masse. Due to the recurrence of the disease, those who caught the plague were constantly sent to the island in order to prevent its contagiousness and the burning process continued for many years. In this way, a total of 160,000 people were brutally murdered.

Due to the plague disease spreading outside the island, private doctors called “plague doctors” emerged. Doctors’ clothes and masks have a specially designed frightening image. In fact, the clothes of these doctors are among the sources that inspired many horror movies. The mask used by the doctors involved in the treatment is in the shape of a beak. Doctors, who thought that they could cure the plague with fragrant scents, applied fragrances to the tip of the beak.

There are remains of cremated human corpses from that period all over Adana. The island of death, located in the middle of Europe, is also known for another feature. Poveglia Island was also used as a mental hospital in those years. In 1992, a mental hospital was built on the island, and doctors performed terrible experiments on patients, causing the death of patients.

Torture type experiments called lobotomy were applied on psychological patients. The surgical procedure performed by removing the frontal lobe of the brain turned into torture rather than treatment and caused people to die. A doctor who has been experimenting for years in the bell tower on the island has lost his mind when he starts seeing the ghosts of his deceased patients. This doctor, who climbed the bell tower, mysteriously fell and died.

The autopsy performed on the doctor revealed that his death was not due to a fall. It is said that a mist coming out of the ground after he fell, suffocating him to death. Many people believe that the doctor’s cause of death was the ghosts of his deceased patients. At the same time, many burns were found on the body of the doctor who was autopsied. The strange cause of death of the doctor could not be found exactly despite the examinations and autopsies.

Venetian fishermen don’t even want to fish near Poveglia Island. No one dares to go there because of the stories told about the island and its desolation. The fact that the corpses of the people who died on the island are still around makes it even more frightening. According to the people who managed to get rid of the island without dying, it is said that it is said to go and never come back. In addition, it is said that although centuries have passed since the events on the island, bells and screams are still heard on the island.
