Turkey II. As part of the measures taken during the World War II, he built a shelter under the Ankara Castle. The historical shelter, whose door has been kept closed for years, is like a second city. The shelter was built for the Turkish Armed Forces and the Government to work in safety. It was also built as a precaution against a possible attack. The historical shelter is planned to be turned into a museum by Ankara Altındağ Municipality.
The shelter, which was established on an area of 1200 square meters, was built with the support of Germany. The shelter was designed to meet the short-term needs of 3600 people and the long-term needs of 1200 people. The shelter, which is estimated to have been built in the 1940s, is protected by steel doors. The two doors of the shelter, which have three entrance doors, are not used because they settle on the ground over time. Entry is possible through only one gate.
Every detail has been considered for human life under the conditions of the period in which it was built. The width of the shelter is 3 and a half 4 meters, and its height is 3, 3 and a half meters. It has 10 living rooms, 15 rooms, 10 corridors, 12 toilets, 8 urinals, 12 sinks, 2 water motors, 1 water tank, 1 spare generator group, 2 ventilation systems, 1 heating system, lighting system and fire alarm system. At the same time, there is a heating and ventilation system that can serve the entire shelter. In the shelter, which receives its energy from the city network in general, there are 2 generators against power cuts.
The bunker is equipped with a special ventilation system and is protected against gas attacks with 4 air filters. There are also 2 ventilation systems and a 1 ton water tank. It was converted into a general purpose shelter with a decision taken in 1964. In the decision taken on January 15, 1964, it was given to the Ankara Governor’s Office to be used for civil defense purposes.
Today, the shelter, which was transferred to Altındağ Municipality, will gain the feature of being a disaster awareness center by preserving its shelter features. It will be opened to citizens and its contribution to cultural tourism will be provided. At the same time, in case of any possible disaster and emergency, it will be handed over to the Governorship of Ankara and put into service. Thus, the buildings and facilities required for the shelter-like use of this area will be kept usable continuously. Under the castle shelter, which remains idle, will be opened to visitors, and will be turned into a disaster awareness center and a museum.
