Petrified Forest is a national park located in Arizona, USA. Spanning 896 kilometers, the national park is filled with rolling hills and tree trunks turned to stone. The past of the park, which is arid today and covers a large area, is not the same as it is today. 225 million years ago, the present-day wasteland appears to have been once fed by rivers and filled with tall coniferous trees. But as the Earth evolved, the green vegetation of the land in this region also disappeared. In its place, the petrified remains of the forest that once covered the area remained. The park has been accepted as a candidate to be included in the World Heritage list by UNESCO since 2008.
Petrified Forest National Park has thousands of years of history. The forest contains various fossil resources. It is especially important in terms of animal and plant fossils that lived in the Late Triassic Period. These fossils include, in addition to dinosaurs, fossilized plants, cows and insects. The Petrified Forest is also home to unique naturally occurring beauties. The colors, shapes and patterns of the petrified trees in the forest are unique. In addition, the area called Painted Desert, located in the forest, stands out with the rocks formed in various colors. Petrified Forest is a great travel destination for visitors. It is an important attraction for history, nature and science enthusiasts. The forest is used as an open-air museum and allows visitors to explore fossil resources and natural beauty.
The Process of Turning Trees into Stone
The Petrified Forest National Park, located within the Painted Desert, can be accessed via a 44 km road. The trunks of pine trees, which were petrified as a result of a volcanic eruption 225-170 million years ago, are located in the park. The ashes and sediments of the volcano covered the trees with a heavy flood, and quartz entered between the cells of the trees and petrified. Petrified tree trunks are spread over a wide area and broken. Tree age rings are clearly visible on tree trunks. In addition to petrified trees, the park also has a museum displaying a sandstone rock (Newspaper Rock) and fossil specimens dating to AD 1000-1300.
The forest was preserved in the mineralized form of organic materials that lived thousands of years ago and turned into a stone structure. The organic materials of the trees are exposed to the minerals in the water and turn into a stone structure over time. As a result of this process, the leaves, branches, bark and even the internal structures of the trees are mineralized and protected. In this cycle, the cells and spaces of the trees were filled with silicate and quartz globules and petrified, preserving the structure of the root tissue.
There are examples that you can see in open air museums in different parts of the world. There are also examples of petrified forests in Turkey, but adequate studies have not been done on them and a national park identity has not been gained. For example, there are examples of petrified forests in the Yunt Mountain region of Manisa, the Galat Massif in the Çamlıdere district of Ankara, the districts of Kızılcahamam, Beypazarı, Kazan, Çubuk, the Kurşunlu and Ilgaz districts of Çankırı, and the province of Bolu.

Petrified Forest National Park is a national park in northeastern Arizona that encompasses the Painted Desert. The park is located near the city of Flagstaff and is administered by the US National Park Service. The park’s headquarters is 42 east of the city of Holbrook and is on Interstate 40. The highway runs through the park in an east-west direction, and parallel to this highway are the BNSF Railroad’s “Southern Transcom Line” railroad, the Puerco River, and the historic federal highway US Route 66. Route 66 is a popular route that attracts a lot of tourists.
Petrified Forest National Park was declared a “national monument” by presidential decree in 1906 and became a national park in 1962 by the law of the US Congress. In the south, there are lands called “badlands” consisting of eroded, dry, very clay soils and soft sedimentary rocks.
