The Secret of the Dolls Found on the Island

There is a tragic reason for the dolls that are found scattered all over the island. According to the legend about dolls; A little girl who came to the island in the 1950s disappeared. After a long search, the girl’s body was found drowned in the water channel.

A farmer named Don Julian Santana, who lives alone on the island, later finds a doll in the water channel that he thinks belongs to the little girl. The farmer threw a branch of a tree, thinking that the little girl was his doll. He did this to honor the spirit of the girl and to protect the island from evil spirits. This act he did has turned into a ritual over time. Over time, he began to hang dolls on all the trees on the island.

He continued this for nearly fifty years. He has hung more than 500 dolls all over the island. The oldest dolls are hung at the entrance of the island. Worn out over time, dolls resemble a rotting child’s body when viewed from afar. There are many dolls with their heads cut off, their clothes dirty torn and their hair tangled. These dolls, which are found all over the island, create a very interesting sight.

Over time, the interest in the island increased and tourists started to come. Santana and his family also started to earn money by organizing activities for tourists. But in 2001, she drowned and died in Santana, like a little girl, by falling into a water channel. Santana’s tomb was built on the island and a doll was hung over the tomb to continue the ritual. Being one of the most interesting places in Mexico, Bebek Island is visited by thousands of local and foreign tourists every year.
