Colorful Carpet Fields of Antalya

Antalya’s carpet fields, with their fascinating array of colors, are decorated with hand-woven carpets and rugs collected from all over Turkey. This magical process begins in the Döşemealtı district of Antalya, when the warm rays of the sun spread on the fields to bring together the colors of the textures with a delicate pastel. Hundreds of carpets and rugs, each handmade, create a visual feast and a magnificent feast of colors in the fields.

These works, produced using madder-dyed threads on weaving looms, are collected from provinces all over Turkey, washed and dried carefully, then repaired and finally laid out on the fields again. This process in which they are exposed to the sun helps them both cleanse themselves of germs and give their colors a pastel beauty.

How long carpets and rugs should stay in the sun can vary between 10 days and 2 years, depending on the quality of their production. During rainy weather, these magnificent works are stored in warehouses and laid out on the fields again when the sun emerges again. Agricultural lands where thousands of carpets are laid side by side also attract the attention of photography enthusiasts.

However, in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to find products due to the decrease in the number of people weaving carpets and rugs in the villages. For this reason, the 60 thousand carpets and rugs produced in previous years have decreased to 15 thousand in recent years. This traditional handicraft not only offers a visual feast that showcases the beauties of Antalya, but also plays an important role in preserving our cultural values.
