Formation of Rocks in Meteora Region

Located in the west of Thessalia near the Pindos Mountains, this unique region has more than 100 rock pillars, some of which exceed 600 meters in height. Geologists have difficulty in explaining the formation of these unusual geological structures. Because the rock pillars in Meteora are not composed of hard volcanic rocks like fairy chimneys or volcanic chimneys, but soft materials such as sandstone and conglomerate.

Conglomerate is formed by the combination of stones, sand and mud accumulated over millions of years at rivers and lakesides. Paleogene seismic movements push up the seabed, creating a high plateau and multiple horizontal fault lines within the thick sandstone layer. Later, as a result of water, wind and heat erosion, these huge rock pillars are formed. According to research by geologists, these rock blocks were formed 60 million years ago.
