In the 13th century, soil brought from the Holy Land in Jerusalem was sprinkled on this area, making the cemetery a sacred place. The existence of the holy land made the region famous not only in Kutná Hora, but throughout Central Europe. Rich and devout Christians lined up to be buried here, and over time, the cemetery began to overflow.
Until 1318, approximately 30 thousand people were buried in this cemetery due to epidemics and wars. With the addition of the Hussite Wars in the 14th century, the situation became even more complicated and the bones of the dead began to pile up in the cemetery area. In this process, a monk started working on arranging the bones and created a total of 6 huge pyramids. Today, 4 of these pyramids can still be seen.
Remastering and the Birth of Art
The church became what it is today when the Schwarzenberg family owned the area and the artist František Rint was commissioned in the 1870s. Rint created decorative elements from bones found in the cemetery, making the church both a religious and artistic monument. The bones used in every corner of the interior were arranged with detailed workmanship, from chandeliers to decorations.
Even the noble coat of arms of the Schwarzenberg family was designed with bones. Interestingly, the skull figure in the coat of arms symbolizes the Ottoman Empire. This provides an interesting clue to the political and cultural connections of his time.
