Statues of Seljuk Sultans Reanimated with DNA Analysis!

In Konya, with the DNA and anatomy analyzes carried out within the scope of the “Arrangement of the Bodies in the Konya Dynastic Tomb of the Turkish Seljuks” project, the facial and body appearances of a total of 17 Seljuk dynasty members, 12 of which were sultans, were revealed again.

Within the scope of the project, the physical characteristics of the sultans were determined in detail using scientific methods. Many details such as hair and skin color, posture, height and muscle structure have been revealed through DNA analysis.

According to the data obtained, lower and upper skin colors were calculated and pre-death physical states were recreated with great accuracy. Among the sultans of different ages, the physical appearances of a 21-year-old sultan and another 83-year-old sultan can be observed side by side in the exhibition.

The Clothes of the Sultans Are Based on Historical Sources

The clothes used in the sculptures were designed by adhering to the fabrics and miniatures of the period. Fabric samples taken from private collections of the period and museums were subjected to thread analysis.

The fabrics, whose color and texture characteristics were extracted through reporting processes, were rewoven in accordance with historical data. The clothes of the sultans were specially prepared to reflect their social status and the clothing style of their period.

The Process From DNA and Tomography Data to Sculpture

Skull and tooth samples extracted from the remains in the dynasty tomb were subjected to detailed biochemical examination. With the data obtained, the skull and facial muscles of the sultans were reconstructed.

3D modeling was done by calculating tissue thicknesses. Then, hair, beard, eyebrow and mustache transplantation was performed on silicone castings. In these meticulous studies, historical sources of the period were also used.
