This frog, distinguished from other species by its flat body, triangular-shaped head and small black eyes, undertakes one of the most interesting parenting roles in nature by carrying its young in honeycomb-like chambers on its back. The frog’s life cycle becomes a unique example of nature as the eggs hidden on the female’s back hatch over time and babies are born.

Interesting Mating Process of Surinam Frogs

The mating process of Surinam frogs is as interesting as their lifestyle. Like many other frogs, males do not croak; instead, they make clicking-like sounds to attract a mate. These sounds are produced by the movement of the hyoid bone in their throat. When the male finds a female frog, he climbs on her back and begins to mate by wrapping his front legs around the female in a position called “amplexus”.

In this position, the couple swims together in the water and performs graceful somersaults. During this dance, which can last for hours, the female performs most of the swimming with her hind legs because she is larger than the male. During one of the moments when they are upside down, the female lays her eggs, which fall towards the male’s abdomen. The pair then returns to an upright position and the eggs settle on the female’s back. At this point, the male frog fertilizes the eggs and the extraordinary egg care process begins.

Egg Laying and the Reproductive Cycle

The eggs begin to become embedded in the female’s skin approximately 24 hours after fertilization. During this process, the female’s back skin swells, covering the eggs and creating a cover that hides them from the outside world. It takes about three to four months for baby frogs to develop inside this secure structure.

As the cubs grow, the movements of the female on her back become increasingly noticeable from the outside. When the babies reach a sufficient size, the skin on the mother frog’s back swells and the movements of the babies become visible. Eventually, the little frogs crawl out of the chambers on their backs, leaving small holes in their mother’s skin. This is the moment when the cubs begin their independent lives. After releasing her offspring, the mother frog sheds her damaged skin and prepares for the next reproductive cycle by creating a new skin layer.
