Besides the A, B, AB and O blood types that people mostly know, there is another unique blood type known as “golden blood” due to its rarity and medicinal value. This blood type, scientifically known as Rhnull (Rhesus null), is referred to as “golden blood” due to its extreme rarity and high value in terms of blood donation.
It was first detected in an indigenous woman in Australia in 1961. rhnullhas since been discovered in many different cases. Scientists predict that this rare blood type can be seen in approximately one in 6 million people worldwide.
Why Is Golden Blood So Special?
Broadly speaking, there are four main blood groups: A, B, AB and 0. This grouping is based on the A and B antigens found on the surface of red blood cells, which can trigger an immune response. Blood group A carries the A antigen, blood group B carries the B antigen, while blood group AB contains both antigens; Group O does not have any of these antigens.
In addition to these antigens, there is another protein on the surface of red blood cells, known as the Rh factor, which determines whether the blood group is positive (+) or negative (-). In fact, there are a total of 61 different antigens in the Rh system, and classification as positive or negative in this system is made according to the presence or absence of the Rh(D) antigen.

Universal Compatibility of Golden Blood

This condition occurs when a person inherits two mutated copies of the RHCE gene from both the mother and father. Since Rhnull blood does not contain any antigens, it does not trigger the immune system and is therefore considered a “universal” blood source for people with rare blood groups in the Rh system. Thanks to this feature, it is seen as a very valuable source in blood transfusion.

Rhnull blood is also used in biomedical research to develop immunoglobulin-based drugs for the treatment of Rhesus disease, a condition during pregnancy in which antibodies in the mother’s blood attack the baby’s blood cells. However, carrying Rhnull blood brings with it some serious problems. For example, if a Rhnull carrier needs a blood transfusion, it is extremely difficult to find a compatible donor. Because other blood groups are not compatible with people in this group and only Rhnull blood can be used.
Additionally, Rhnull blood type is associated with some health complications. Red blood cells that lack Rh proteins are structurally more fragile, creating a fragility that can easily rupture or damage the cells.

Effects and Valuable Aspects of Golden Blood on Health

Mild to moderate hemolytic anemia from birth: This disorder occurs due to faster destruction of red blood cells, leading to low hemoglobin levels and symptoms such as fatigue and pallor. This condition is caused by structural disorders of red blood cells.
Loss of elasticity and fragile structure of red blood cells: While the fragility of cells increases due to Rh antigen deficiency, the abnormal structure of the cell membrane can further increase this fragility.
Volume changes in red cells: Structural defects of cells can cause changes in both volume and shape.
