The Tribe That Cooks by Extracting the Oil of the Dead

The tribes, which lead a life quite far from modern life, are known for their interesting traditions and lifestyles. Some of these tribes, who lead a life away from technology, have incredible traditions that are unknown how they started. The tribes living in the Morobe mountain region of Papua New Guinea still keep a chilling tradition alive.

The tribe living in the region regards the deceased as sacred. Therefore, they use it by removing the fat of the deceased. They perform a number of applications to remove the fat from the person’s body. This tradition is not approved by the Catholic Church and has been banned since 1975. However, some tribes living in remote areas still continue the practice.

Method and Reason of Fat Extraction:

For the oil extraction process, holes are made in the feet, elbows and knees of the deceased by private individuals who understand the embalming business. Then they hang the body of the deceased somewhere. They collect oil drops by attaching bamboo trees to their guts. The oil is given to the family of the deceased. The family of the person rubs this oil all over their body. It is believed that this will lead to a healthier and longer life. The remaining oil is used in food. The main purpose of the tradition is to have the power and characteristics of the deceased.

The soles of the feet, palms and tongue of the deceased are cut off and given to the living family. In order not to spoil the corpse, the corpse is turned over a fire burned in a pit, and it is smoked and salted. At the same time, their bodies are covered with mud and ocher to keep carnivores away.

When you go to the Morobe mountainous region of Papua New Guinea, it is possible to see charred human corpses on the rocks. The flesh of the corpses is painted red and hung in cages to prevent it from falling. This tradition, which is quite a scary sight, keeps foreigners away from this village. The mountains of the village are covered with corpses thought to date back more than 200 years. During the special celebrations of the tribe, they take these corpses down and leave them back in place after the celebration.

According to the Anga people living in the region, this is the highest honor they can bestow on the dead. It is believed that these are special guards guarding the village. They hang the most respected people and warriors on the most beautiful parts of the cliffs. It is thought that he watched and protected the village.
