It is also connected to the Köstere-Gümüşhane Road at the 67th kilometer with a 1,212-meter overpass. During the construction process, 90 curves were removed and the slope was reduced from 7.70 percent to 3.30 percent. Zigana Tunnel was opened on May 3, 2023 with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu. It won the best project award in the “Construction Methodology” category at the 2023 Global Achievement Awards. According to the statements made in 2024, the tunnel will save 152 million liras of time and 210 million liras of fuel per year, while reducing carbon emissions by 15 thousand tons annually.
