The Kola Pit, the deepest hole ever drilled into the world by man, is a borehole drilled on the Kola Peninsula, close to the Norwegian border of Russia. It is a scientific study that aims to dig deep into volcanic rocks in the 1970s. The work continued until 1989 and the Coke Pit entered the Guinness Book of Records as the deepest hole ever drilled into the world. The rocks extracted from this hole provided important information about the internal structure of the Earth. Although it is said that the works on the well were terminated due to lack of funds, there are many legends about it. Although it has not been scientifically proven, it is among the claims that incredible things were encountered at the bottom of the well and therefore the studies were terminated.
The Kola borehole reached a depth of 12,262 meters (40,230 feet). The well has helped scientists work towards understanding the structure of the Earth. The Kola Pit also helped gather information about volcanic activity and geological events. The project was stopped in 2005 due to lack of funds, and the excavation site has been abandoned since 2008. The record for the deepest drilling of the Kola deep drilling has not been broken for nearly twenty years. However, after this period, the 12,289-meter drilling in the Al Shaheen oil field in Qatar and the 12,345-meter drillings near the Russian island of Sakhalin broke the depth records.

Scientific Researches in the Coke Pit
The first planned depth within the scope of the project is 15 thousand meters. The pit had the title of being the deepest borehole until 1979. After 1983, although the depth of 12 thousand meters was exceeded, the works were interrupted for a while. Then, in 1984, the drilling equipment was broken at 12,066 meters. While a temperature of 100 degrees was expected at this depth, values of 180 degrees were encountered. Due to the difficulty of the work, the project was stopped in 1992.
Kola drilling has advanced about one-third of the Baltic continental crust, reaching the 2.5 billion-year-old Archean Era rock strata in the deepest parts. With the drilled well; The structure of the earth’s crust, seismic movements and thermal distribution were observed. Research has contributed to science in various fields such as chemical composition, properties and physical structure of transition zones.
One of the important discoveries made is that the variation of seismic velocities is not from granite to basalt. It was surprising that the rocks 5 to 10 kilometers below the surface were completely misshapen and filled with water. These waters, which are different from the surface water, are thought to have been prevented from reaching the surface by a layer. Another scientific phenomenon found by scientists during drilling is the amount of extraordinarily high levels of hydrogen gas in the depths.

Sounds from the Coke Well
A legend about the coke well began to spread in Europe in the late 1980s. Although the legend took place in Russia, it was published in the Finnish newspaper Ammennusatia and later spread all over the world. During the works carried out in the well, a drilling machine, which looks like a giant drill, was placed at the bottom of the pit and the drilling process was started. While the excavated soils are being examined, it is requested that the drilling go as far as it can go.
In the well, which reaches 12 thousand meters after long studies, the tip of the giant drill starts to rotate at an incredible speed. This situation, which surprised scientists and technicians, suggests that there is an underground cave. No matter how the drill has reached a gap, there is nothing to break and drill. Thus, some examinations are made on the drill, which has been carefully removed from its place. Meanwhile, hot air and hums begin to come from the well opened. To understand what’s going on in the well, the team first measures the temperature at depth. It is seen that the temperature that can be measured with precision measuring instruments is much higher than the expected temperature. Other devices are downloaded considering that the device is corrupted, but the same results occur again.

Taking part in the studies and the authorized name on the earth’s crust, Dr. Dimitri Azzakov said: “Suddenly the drill started spinning like crazy, it was an indication that we had come to a cave and a void. Thermometers showed an incredible temperature of 1200 degrees. This was more than we expected. It was as if there was a hell fire in the center of the world.” Azzakov requests that the drilling work be stopped and that heat-resistant electrical cables be given to him. Sensitive microphones with heat shields used in spacecraft are placed at the end of the cables and suspended from the well. Within a few hours, noises from the microphone also begin to form.
Azzakov turns on the speaker attached to the microphone, waiting to hear the pressure and tension created by the molten rock. But all he and his crew of five hear are sounds similar to the screams of hundreds of people. Screams that do not belong to a single person are in the form of millions of human cries. For this reason, scientists were afraid to continue the project. It has revealed the myth that the sounds coming from the well are a well that leads to hell. Allegedly, most data and documents were destroyed so that what happened in the well would not be known.
