Having a waterfall under the water is not very plausible. However, there is an underwater waterfall with a height of 3.5 kilometers. Moreover, it has the title of the largest waterfall in the world. Located in the Mauritius Islands in the Indian Ocean, this unusual formation is the Danish Bosphorus Waterfall. It is larger than Angel Falls, known as the largest waterfall in the world.
Located in the depths of the ocean, the waterfall is not in a position to be seen at normal water level. To see the waterfall, it is necessary to look from above. It is 3.5 kilometers long and 160 meters wide. The amount of water flowing from the waterfall is approximately 5 million cubic meters. Due to its fascinating appearance, it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every year, hundreds of tourists flock to the region to see the waterfall from above.
How Was the Underwater Waterfall Formed?
The Danish Bosphorus Waterfall is a structure that is completely formed by the conformity of the laws of physics. It is a natural phenomenon that occurs in very rare regions and arises from the temperature difference that occurs at the intersection of two seas. The current that brings the arctic cold from the Greenland Sea is formed by the meeting of the warm waters of the Irminger Sea. While the cold water moves into the lower layers due to its density, the hot water creates a current in the upper layers. In this way, the extraordinary formation that gives the appearance of a waterfall emerges.
Besides waterfalls, the region contains huge underwater rivers, islands and plains. The region has become one of the most influential underwater spots in the world. It is one of the places that attracts great attention and research by scientists.
The interesting rivers that emerged with the increase in the salt content in the water carry sediments like the rivers on land. After the geological studies, strong underwater currents that constantly erode the sand form high plateaus under the ocean. Streams of sand and mud flowing from the plateau to the depths of the ocean are clearly visible in the clear ocean water. When viewed from above, the waterfall gives the impression of being an extraterrestrial place. Scientists have identified such waterfalls in 7 places in the world’s oceans. One of them is located in Istanbul, Turkey.
