Recall allegations regarding SMA baby food, and especially Nestlé SMA products, are being closely followed by parents. Following the developments that started in Europe, “Is SMA food being recalled? Has sales been stopped in Türkiye?” questions came to the fore. The statements made by Nestlé and official institutions on the subject shed light on the curious details.
Recall Decision Was Made in Europe
Nestlé voluntarily recalled some baby food and follow-on milk products in Germany and Austria due to the possibility of a toxin called “cereulide”. While certain batch numbers of the BEBA and ALFAMINO series were withdrawn from the shelves in Germany, Austrian health authorities warned parents to be careful.
Authorities particularly emphasized that there have been no confirmed health cases associated with the products in either country so far.
What is Cereulide and why is it important?
Cereulide is known as a toxin that can be produced by some types of Bacillus cereus bacteria. According to experts, this substance can cause vomiting and stomach disorders and cannot be neutralized even with boiling water due to its heat-resistant structure. For this reason, preventive recalls are implemented for products that may pose a risk.
Is SMA Food Recovered in Türkiye?
Following UK-based warnings, Nestlé Türkiye also made an assessment on the issue. Company, It published a batch number-based voluntary recall list for some SMA baby food products sold in Türkiye. Consumers were asked to check the batch numbers on the packaging of the products they purchased and not to use the products on the list.
Nestlé officials announced that this practice was a purely precautionary measure and that no health problems have been reported in Türkiye to date.
Why were Nestlé SMA Foods Recalled?
According to the information made by the company, the recall process was initiated after the possibility of microbiological risk was detected in some products coming from the production line in the Netherlands. Parents were asked to be careful, especially for certain batch numbers of the SMA Optipro 1 series.
Nestlé reiterated that the products in question were on the market until June, but no negative cases have occurred so far.
Official Statement from Nestlé Türkiye
In the statement made by Nestlé Türkiye, the following statements were made:
“Consumer safety is always a top priority for Nestlé. Due to the possibility of a microorganism toxin (cereulide) that can cause foodborne illness, a voluntary recall has been decided, limited to certain batch numbers. There have been no confirmed health cases to date.”
In the statement, it was recommended not to use the relevant products, to return them to the point of sale where they were purchased and to get a refund, and to consult a healthcare professional in case of doubt.
Which SMA Foods Are Under Recall?
Nestlé Türkiye shared the relevant batch numbers of SMA Comfort, SMA Optipro 1 and SMA AR products, which are within the scope of recall, through official channels. It was stated that parents should only take action for products matching these numbers.
