Bosnian Pyramids; They are geometric surface shapes located in the city of Visoko, northwest of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These geometric surface shapes are also called Visoko Pyramids. Bosnian researcher and writer Semir Osmanagic claims that these shapes are giant man-made pyramids. The claim made; The reason is that the pyramids date back to the last ice age, perhaps 12 thousand years ago. These allegations had a great impact around the world. The scientific community does not accept the existence of the Bosnian pyramids. However, some people think that Semir Osmanagiç is trying to be silenced.
In 2006, Semir Osmanagic published a book about the pyramids called ”Bosnian Valley of Pyramids”. In his book; He claimed that the hills in the town of Visoko were giant pyramids that dwarfed even the pyramids of Egypt. The names of these hills are as follows;
Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun (Visocica hill)
Bosnian Pyramid of the Moon (Pljesivica Hrasce hill)
Bosnian Dragon Pyramid (Bucki Gaj hill)
Bosnian Pyramid of Love (Cetnica hill)
Mother Earth Temple (Krstac hill)
Sixth Pyramid (Vrela hill)

Science’s Approach to the Bosnian Pyramids
On the Pyramid Claims, UNESCO Secretary Koichiro Matsuura announced on 5 June 2006 that he would send an expert team to investigate. This showed that Osmanagic’s allegations were taken seriously and gave the impression of being true. For this reason, it was criticized by many experts and a letter was sent to UNESCO about this visit. Mark Rose, who completed his doctorate in classical archeology and is the online editorial director of the American Archaeological Institute, stated that the letter reached the following conclusion;
“Osmanagiç Bey’s pyramid claims and the activities of his team pose a serious threat to the rich historical, cultural and archaeological heritage of the Visoko region. The visit of UNESCO experts to this region should not be allowed to be represented by Mr. Osmanagic in support of his so-called archaeological claims. This visit should include Bosnian experts, geologists, archaeologists and historians, should it happen, and allow their scientific views to be heard. Bosnia and Herzegovina lost some of its most important and beautiful cultural and historical heritage from the 1992-1995 war. It would be irresponsible to allow so-called archeology to destroy surviving legacies.”

There is no evidence to support the claims of researcher Osmanagic. However, these allegations soon managed to turn the eyes of the world media to Bosnia. A large number of visitors went to the alleged pyramid valley. Due to the pyramids, there was a boom in the Bosnian tourism sector and Osmanagic became a national hero. According to many archaeologists, Osmanagiç’s finds are actually the remains of Roman and medieval structures on the hill. Professor Anthony Harding is an expert visiting the site as president of the European Association of Archaeologists and considers the hill to be a natural landform. In 2006, the European Association of Archaeologists recognized the Bosnian Pyramids as a hoax.
Osmanagiç’s claims were rejected by many archaeologists as unfounded. Under the leadership of Hermann Parzinger, the head of the German Archaeological Institute, a statement signed by the important archaeologists of Europe was published. In this statement, it is explained that Osmanagic’s claims are not credible and such claims cannot be taken seriously in real science. In addition, many Bosnian archaeologists have made it clear that the excavations will do nothing but damage some historical remains unrelated to the pyramid claims.

Allegations About the Bosnian Pyramids
Researcher Semir Osmanagic started excavations in 2005 in the area he named “Pyramid of the Sun”. It is noteworthy that the ends of this pyramid coincide with the north-south-east-west directions. Osmanagic claims that the pyramid under the hill contains layers of clay and a stone-paved entrance hall. Therefore, he claims that the Visoko Pyramids are the first known pyramids in Europe. However, it is possible that the shape of an existing hill was smoothed into a pyramid shape and steps were built on its slopes. According to Osmanagiç, the history of the Pyramids goes back to the period when the Illyrians (ancestors of the Albanians) settled in the Balkans. This period is before Slavic tribes started arriving in the region around 600 AD.
Osmanagiç; One-third larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, Visoko Peak is certain to be man-made. He named this hill the “Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun” because of its resemblance to the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico. Satellite photographs and images obtained by thermography showed that there were two more pyramid-like peaks in the Visoko Valley. Osmanagiç claims that this region is a center of ancient structures such as the Bosnian Moon Pyramid, the Bosnian Dragon Pyramid, the Bosnian Love Pyramid, and the Earth Temple.

Another claim of Osmanagic; is that the largest pyramid is covered with a concrete superior to modern building materials, and under this pyramid is the largest underground tunnel network ever discovered. Inside these tunnels are ceramic sculptures of the ancient world weighing several tons. According to Osmanagiç, the pyramids were built by an ancient civilization that history has never written, using methods unknown to modern science. Although the Bosnian Pyramids did not show support, excavations on the Bosnian Pyramids still continue today. While Osmanagic’s excavations in the region continue, convincing evidence is awaited to support his claim that there are ice age pyramids in Bosnia.
