Photos of a mountain range in Anlong County, southwestern China’s Guizhou Province, have sparked great interest online. These images, recently shared on social media, show many mountain peaks resembling Egyptian pyramids and have sparked a debate about the origin of these peaks.
While some people claim that these mountains are man-made and possibly hide the tombs of ancient emperors, others believe they were created by aliens. But the truth, although fascinating, is simpler; These mountains are natural formations.
Formation of China’s Pyramid Mountains
According to geologist Professor Zhou Qiuwen of Guizhou Normal University, these pyramid-like mountains are neither man-made nor ancient burial sites. On the contrary, they are extraordinary examples of nature’s art.
Guizhou Province in southwestern China is known for its steep peaks and deep valleys stretching across the landscape. The mountains in the photographs are part of karst topography formed by the dissolution of soluble carbonate rocks. These cone-shaped peaks are the result of natural rock formations dissolving over time.
Zhou explained: “Vertical erosion by water caused the initial large masses of rock to separate into independent units. As this process of erosion continues, the overlying rocks are significantly dissolved, while the underlying rocks are relatively less affected. This leads to the formation of sharp peaks on broad bases.”
The rocks at Anlong are limestone formations dating back 200 million years to the early and middle Triassic periods. These rocks were affected by periodic changes in climate and geology and formed in a marine environment where minerals dissolved in water recrystallized to form different layers.
The observed brick-like structures are the result of natural corrosive processes. Zhou explained that geological processes in karst landscapes can break layered rocks into smaller blocks, giving the appearance of man-made structures. Tiny cracks within the rocks allow water to slowly erode them, resulting in fragmented block-like formations rather than completely dissolving.
